Darling Downs Bunnies
« on: February 13, 2009, 11:39:21 AM »
A good mate of mine sent me a few pictures of his Rabbit hunting trip last weekend , seems that the Rabbit population is making a big comback from the affects of drought , Mixomitosis [ how do you spell that ] and Calicy [ spelling ] Virus in his district . Total of 46 bunnies for the pot , with only a couple kicking they way down the burrow .

He used a Stoeger 12 guage and SSG shot [ talk about overkill ] which certainly anchors the tough little blighters and a Savage .22 with Powerpoint ammunition . His Stoeger is a dead ringer for my Boito shotgun - gotta come from the same factory . He reckons his is better cause it has a Berreta stamp on it - he just wont accept they are only the distributors . At least my Boito has a nice oil finish Brazilian swampwood stock and not a crappy laquor finish .

Not a bad swag of Rabbits for a short walk hey

Nice day out for a walk is right!

My girls are going to love that picture, too   :D

I have a wife and 2 girls with Bambi syndrome bad - they do not appreciate me bringing game meat into the house and they squirmed when I showed them this photo - I'll continue to toughen them up . Wish those bunnies where in my freezer !

Might just defrost that last Venison brisket roast I have for Valentines day - rather fitting in my situation  ;)

Mine say "Awww, those poor little bunnies" in one breath and pass the meat in the other.  They LOVE venison steaks and roasts.  I really can't complain  :)

Thanks for the report Jacko.   It kinda reminds me of the Arizona and California deserts full of rabbits, well JackRabbits for sure. ;D

My mate shot those rabbits near Chinchilla , only a few hours north west of Warrick . Seems since the drought has broken in most of Queensland the rabbits are breeding up .

I was chatting to a fella the other day and he was saying the Calicy virus has run it's coarse and the rabbits are now showing much improved immunity and like mixamotosis it is now proving ineffective as a control measure . The cocky's are back to ripping and dynamiting the warrens .

I read in the local paper that rabbits are starting to breed all along the D'agular hwy area into the Bunyah mountains and into the Darling Downs , once I got my Browning BL22 sighted in with it's new Red dot sight I'll be going for a drive in the country and door knocking
