I do not carry a pistol because I do not have a concealed carry permit, which would be required on town trail crossings in my home state. Therefore I have been relegated to using long arms. I have found two to be quite satisfactory insofar as weight, length and portability are concerned. The rifle that has taken plenty of backpacking abuse and held up is a Winchester 94 Trapper in .44 magnum. It fits quite well and lashes easily to the pack while in a fly fishing case. This way it can go into town unobtrusively. The other firearm I often carry is a Police/Deer Slayer 12 gage Lightweight Ithaca Model 37. It also fits into a fly fishing case and transports well.
