I cant believe i did this.
« on: March 22, 2009, 03:43:43 PM »
I poured Hot water down my barrel this evening. I just had a horrible day at the range today with my 45cal Knight Disc Elite. I assume i had or have plastic build up in the rifling. A forum member told me hot water is the fastest way to get rid of it. So i boiled water and flushed the barrel really well and ran alot of dry patches to. I also swabbed the barrel with alchohol patches to try and get rid of the water.

I hope that is my problem. I couldnt get anything to shoot good at all. XTP'S, SST'S, and Lehigh were all bad today. I hope i dont have a scope issue but i could i guess. I guess i will be shooting more this week. I need to get this gun ready for the hog hunt in a couple weeks. A good scrubbing and hopefully things will be back to normal. Reminds me of a Savage ;D

I cant believe i did this.
                                                             ??? ??? ???
I poured Hot water down my barrel this evening.
Using water, is THAT what you can't believe?

i boiled water and flushed the barrel really well and ran alot of dry patches to.
IMO if you poured boiling water down the bore methinks the metal was so hot there's no need to worry about any residual moisture, evaporation would be complete... don't ya' think?

Anyway, good luck with the plastic fouling if that's what went wrong. Figuring these D-ed things is like voodoo sometimes!  >:(

betcha a box of 40 cal Lehighs - it worked - What you did will strip clean the bore all the way back to fresh metal... that bore will be like new.  I do not like to heat treat them very often but once in a while it must be done, espcially as much and as hot of loads as you are shooting.  The point now will to be stay on top of it so you do not have to heat treat the barrel again in the near future...

Hoppes is OK but it was never designed for plastic fouling... Barnes CR-10 seems to work for me as bore stripper but it again is a slower process... apply really wet and let it sit in a horizontal bore for an hour then patch it out.

This might really be somethng you need to consider doing each time you shoot - especially when you are shooting hot loads or in hot weather (above 60 degrees)

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

I clean my all my BP guns with hot soapy water . what else would you use ? Any thing else except soapy water subsitutes would ruin the seasoning in the bbl.
I don't think hot/boiling water is HEAT TREATING any bbl.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

CVA Sabot Solvent worked really well for me, but I don't think they make it any more >:(.  If you find some pick me up a couple of bottles!  Remington Bore Cleaner works well, but it's a slower process with lots of scrubbing.  Best of luck!

I know there are two schools of thought(at least) on cleaning and lubes, synthetic and non-petroleum/natural. I used to use Bore Butter/Natural Lube, etc. but switched a couple years back and haven't had problems. Butch's Bore Shine if necessary, usually Windex, dry patches, lube it with CLP. I've also used the CVA foaming product with ok results.
