Quick Question for the "experts"
« on: March 14, 2009, 01:49:15 PM »
I had a friend that gave me some Hornady Ammo for my 45-70 because they were brutal out of his handi ( he is a recoil wimp) . I will be shooting them out of my Buffalo Classic. My question is ( since I haven't tried them) Is their any real advantage over a 300gr. Hp? I have shot these for a couple years and had good results but sometimes change can be good. Just wondering. I know the rocoil, POA and such will be different but I did a search and didnt really find a whole lot. Thanks in advance.

It has been my experience that when used on deer size game the 300hp is all you need.
It will give complete pass through, which at least in mine and my buddies cases it didn't matter as every deer ever shot with them except three dropped in their tracks.
Behind the shoulder, in the shoulder (tears up some meat), neck, head it didn't matter, they went down.
We are meat hunters only.
I am sure that the 405gr lead as well as others will do about the same but the 300s will give a flatter trajectory.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks man, I might just use these 325 on hogs, when ur in a chair like I am its kinda hard to get something this big up a tree if I just make him mad ( been there done that........didnt like it lol) I really dont like the 405's 'cause I couldn't get them to shoot as accuratly as I like.

The 325s should do fine also.
In our cases the 300HPs shot so good that we really havn't found any others that would match them and they do all we need.
I tried the 325s in my BC and it didn't like them at all.
Had three boxes and gave them to my buddy.
His BC did even worse with them.
He tried them in his 1885 Browning and they weren't as good as the 300s so he gave them to someone else.
I never tried them in my Win 1886 or my Win 1885.
They may have done ok in them but they both love the 300s so that is what I stick with.

LONGTOM:

 Are these the Rem. bullets?
I have wondered if there is a difference in penetration from the various brands 300 gr. JHP's.

Are they the 325 gr. Hornady Leverevolutions?  They shoot extremely well out of my 22 inch Handi, with moderate recoil and flatter trajectory.  If they're the LEs, I think your POI is going to be higher.

shot #3 i adjusted up, instead of down!!!  did'nt have my specs on!!! ::)

this was using my developed pet load for the rem 300gr sjhp @ 100yrds.
using a lead sled, you can see in #4 thru#6 shots 1/4" adjustments.
could have been percise but....i stop before it gets too good!!!!!!!!

Had a similar thing happen as I was given a box of LE's because they were "brutal,"  LOL!

I shot about three, and although they do have a bit of a shove, they are nowhere near brutal in my opinion.

I shot them and they seemed to follow the same POI as my pet load.

I'll use them for hog erradication!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Sorry BBF, I have been away most of the day.
No, these are the Winchesters.
I have had quite a few bad experences over the years with Rem ammo so I don't use to much of it.

I also was talking anout the Win. 300gr. HP's . I didnt get a chance to do an accuary test but I fired 2 of the 325 Hornady loads and man was that fun. Not Bad recoil and completely destroyed about an 18Ft pine tree with a orange X on it. The tree was about 75 or 80 yrds. and POI was only about 3 1/2 inches higher from POA.
