44 Mag. 2 inch Tracker update
« on: June 15, 2009, 06:02:42 AM »
Finally got to take it to the range again.  This is after reaming the throats to .431 to match the .430 bore, and after drifting the front sight to get it hitting point of aim and after getting the screw from Taurus CS.   ::)

I loaded up the last of some bullets (245 gr BBSWC's and BBRNFP's) member DCrockett had sent me; sized .429.  Before the throating the 25 yard patterns ran very large and the barrel leaded badly.  This time, with 8.2 gr. of Unique for 875 fps +/-, the groups were very nice (for me) and hit right at point of aim!

I also played with some 250 gr. FB Keiths I got from Montana Bullet Works ahead of 8.3 gr of Unique.  For some reason they were not as accurate as DCrockett's bullets.  I had to crimp them over the front driving band as they were to long for the cylinder otherwise.  Even with a heavy crimp they moved foward under recoil and bound the cylinder.  I'm going to try again, but I may just use these in my Ruger SBH.  In that revolver I can crimp them in the crimp groove and they'll fit!

I hate to say it after the experience I had with Taurus CS but, after some work, I like my medium frame (5 shot)  44 mag.  While it's pretty big for a CCW, now that I know it can shoot decent groups, it can still be that and serve a number of other purposes.

All in all I'm happy with it... even though I will probably never buy another Taurus or suggest that anyone else do so.    ;)   ;D
