How should I break in my new Quad?
« on: March 13, 2009, 11:15:46 PM »
It's a 22lr, and I want to get this right. So far all i've done is run some dry patches through it. I think i've read that it takes from 300 to 500 rounds to get a new rifle to settle in, can I use bulk ammo for this?  What about cleaning? I bought a bore snake for use at the range. How often should I use it, and wet with CLP or dry? Thank you for your help.

I don't clean the bore on my .22s until they have at least 10 or 15 thousand rounds down them, .22s are diffrent than centerfires the lube from the bullets needs to stay in the bore to aid in accuratcy. I do clean the action and the outside but not the bore.

I learned this from guys who shoot high dollar .22s in compititions this is what they do.

I clean all my .22s after shooting them just like any other gun.
I do not use plated bullets in most of my .22s as the copper fouling
is a pain in the butt to remove properly. I will not leave my guns dirty.
As for break in on a new gun, I have tried several schemes and have really
noticed no difference in accuracy.

I don't believe you can wear out a 22 rifle by shooting it. You can wear it out by cleaning it too often. JMO  ;D I'm in the camp of shoot them lots and run a bore snake throught once every 6 months or so. You use a bore snake wet and I usually start from the chamber. Regards,

When i was shooting 22's in competition, i never saw one person cleaning their bbls...  My 22 target would go wacko-O after cleaning the bbl, and it took a while of shooting it to get the accuracy to come back...  I learned pretty fast to leave it alone!

Best way i know of to clean the bbl on a 22 rimfire, is to shoot it!

About 10 years ago I bought a heavy barrel, hogue stock and target hammer for a 10-22 and started shooting benchrest. The guys helped me get started.
The bullets were dipped in jewelers rouge. 10 fired, then 10 normal, then 10 in turtle polishing compound, 10 normal, then 10 brasso and many normal (10 or so bricks) until accuracy dropped. The idea was to polish the bore with lighter grits. Did it work? I don't know. But it's had 50-75,000 rounds through it and I still win more than I loose. I do not clean often. Never had a brush down it, only patches.
1+ on the copper bullets above. For me only lead coated as well.
One tip I have when it settles in try http://www.militec1.com/ . It gives you a longer duration between cleanings.
