.270 Interarms Mauser
« on: May 20, 2009, 12:57:10 PM »
I replaced the 6X Mauser Scope with a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3-9X40 & refinished the stock.  This is my beater deer rifle project that I finally got around to completing.

This rifle had a high gloss finish like the older Remington 700BDLs. It was pretty scratched up and every scratch showed up as a white line. There was no way to touch up the scratches.

I tried stripping it myself, but ended up taking the stock to a friend who strips furniture. He did a great job. Be careful with the black forend tips. The stripper etched mine some & I had to sand it back smooth with some 400 sandpaper.

The stock had some real pretty grain that you couldn't see with the original finish.

I used Scotch Bright pads to get it pretty smooth and then I went 0000 steel wool. I did not try to get all the dents out.

When it was smooth enough, I started applying Daler-Rowney Purified Linseed Oil (artist supply area of Walmart)with the 0000 steel wool pad.

I really soaked the stock good, and then wipped off the excess with a lint free rag after an hour or so.

I repeated this process 2 more times waiting 24 between coats.

Make sure you soak all the inletting and under the buttplate.

I then followed the instructions on the Minwax Tung Oil Finish can. Apply a liberal coat & wipe it off really good (lint free rag) after 5-10 minutes. Wait 24 hours between coats. 5 coats gave me a nice satin sheen.

Formby's Tung Oil Finish is a little cheaper but doesn't work as well.

I bought a new one of these in 1977. still have it I jewelled the bolt and had a Timney trigger and a Nodel 70 type bolt handle installed.Mounted a 6 power Burris in Conetrol rings. This is one rifle I will never part with. I stripped the finish of it and low and behold the wood was real walnut

I just noticed the bolt won't operate with the rings tightend down.  I really wanted to use these low vintage Weaver tip-offs but I guess I'm going to have to spend more money on med. rings.  I wish Bushnell's didn't have such huge adjustment rings and ocular bells.

I don't know, I have to order some new rings.

I was able to find some Warne med. rings yesterday.  They are heavy, but seem strong.  I believe they will work,

I've got the same type gun in a .25-06 and with a Burris FF II on top.  Bought it used 6 years ago at a gun show, mainly for the the coloration of the stock.  But, the gun turned out to be a tack driver!

Wow, beautiful, thanks for the how-to on the stock finishing. Not sure my adult ADD ::) would let me be that patient with the finishing job, but I'd like to try some time. Did you do anything to the metal?

I just cleaned it up very carefully with some 0000 steel wool & WD-40.  After that I used Break-Free CLP.

I had a little ring trouble.  The vintage Weaver lows I was saving for this project were too low & the bolt handle wouldn't come all the way back.  A set of Warne mediums were way too high & pretty unattractive.  I found the Burris Zee lows to work perfectly & look great.  The gloss steel Buris rings match the rifle's finish & make the matte finished scope look great too.

Swampy -

We don't agree on much but that is a fine looking rifle.

Ordered my 6.5mm-06AI barrel from Krieger today, as well as a reamer from Pacific Tool.  Am sending thmy Interamrms Mark X action off to Krieger tomorrow before hopping a plane to San Francisco.  Kriger will true the receive face, lap the lugs, polish out a small ding and re-blue the action.  The barrel will be a 24", bead-blasted stainless with a 1-8 twist.  Contour is #6 with 6 flutes.

When I get the action and barrel back I will bed them in the Boyd pepper laminate JRS stock I have waiting.  I'll also add a Tubb Speed Lock.  Won't get the action and barrel back in time to hunt with it this fall but I usually do a lot of load development in January and February and will easily be ready by then.

How does yours shoot?

I just got the scope mounted yesterday afternoon.  I'll let you know.  The barrel looks nice inside though it was very dirty when I got it.  It's also fully free floated.  I hope it shoot well.
