480 vs 460
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:07:12 AM »
Hi everybody. I would like to get an opinion on the recoil of a 460 S&W vs the 480 Ruger
in a Super Redhawk. I am thinking of having a Encore barrel in 460 , 12 inch , un-ported,
custom made. I am wondering about the recoil of the encore pistol, in 460, compared to a
Super Redhawk in 480.   Thanx.     mc

I think the recoil of the encore is going to be greater.
Due to design and weight.
I have a S&W M29 with a 6" barrel and a T/C contender with a 14"
Shootin the same rounds in both guns the contender kicks more.
Not sure if it is because of the ballance of the gun with more weight forward and having to hold the gun differently, the weight of the T/C is less than my 29 or if it is the grip design or the cylinder gap.
The reverse is true when shooting off the bench and I can rest the T/C and apply weight down on the barrel.
I would guess you would have the same results no matter what the caliber.  tossing X weight bullet Y speed out of a handgun is going to generate Z recoil +or - a little based on Powder charge and weight of the gun.

I have owned both a Super Redhawk 480 Ruger, and the Encore 460 Mag barrel. The recoil of the 460 Mag barrel is a lot more than the 480 Ruger.

mcwoodduck has a lot of good information. My Ruger 480 had less felt recoil than my Encore 480 barrel, using the same loads and bullets.
