Neck size only for Encore
« on: March 31, 2009, 12:30:05 PM »
I have obtained   .223 and 7mm-08 barrels for my Encore and was wondering (after firing full length sized brass) if I can just neck size the brass. Does the firearm have enough leverage when closing to chamber "tight" brass? Anyone willing to share their experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Short answer is no. You will need to bump the sholder back, but to what degree depends on the gap between your barrel and frame. Shoot me a an e-mail and I will recommend a site where you can read all about it.

The short answer in Not no, But maybe.  You'll have to try it . I have a  221 Fireball In a contender that I neck size only for with no trouble and a 30-06 in an Encore with the same results. On an other note I have a 223 that I can't Neck size for. The action won't close. You'll Just have to try and see.

I've needed to full length size 7mm Mag. cases for my Encore occasionally but that's the only cartridge I've shot in Encores and Contenders I've had to do it for.  I have so many Encore and Contender barrels that my wife no longer has any idea of how many I have which is a good thing.

On the average, for my Contender and Encore barrels, I full-length size about once every five loadings.  They will tell you when it's needed.  I have one 30/30 barrel that requires full-length sizing every time and another 30/30 barrel that never does, so go figure ??? ??? ???.  I'm beginning to believe that more brass streching goes on during sizing than during firing.  I'm really liking the Lee Collet die.  I've been meaning to get one in 30/30 and try it on brass from the aforementioned 30/30 barrel.

I'm with Hopalong on this one. You have to try it (just like any load development) and see what your gun likes. (Darn guns.....they are a lot like women....try this, try that....sometimes you get it right the first time, sometimes you gotta spend a lot of time and money to get it right! You know....high maintenance ones and low maintenance ones!!!).

My .223 Contender (Factory T\C bull barrel) loves the Lee Collett die. I do the sizing on a single stage press. In fact, I do (if you read the instructions to the die....YES...sometimes I actually do read instructions!!!) what they describe and "double size" it. I size the brass, turn it about 1\4 of a turn, and then size it again. Then after I size all of my brass, I trim it, then complete the reloading on a Hornady LNL progressive....doing all of the rest of the steps except the sizing (of course). I usually load about 500 .223 rounds at once.

Now, my Encore .243 prefers full length sizing. I have a lee collett for the .243, but the Encore shoots much tighter groups using full length sized brass. Go figure? Hey...I don't argue with it, I just size it, load it, and shoot tiny groups with it.

So, you just gotta try it and see what happens.

Okay, maybe then. I suppose there is always an exception. Anybody want to buy a neck size die set of RCBS dies in 7x30 Waters? Hardly used.

At the moment I am just neck sizing for my 7mm-08. I think after a few times loading the same brass they will need FL sizing, not sure yet as I just got the barrel and have only put a few boxes of shells through it ;)
