question about box calls

I was looking at a few box calls the other day. One required chalking. The other was advertised as waterproof and needed no chalk and appeared to have a green coating on the striking surfaces, It was also 12 bucks more. Any advantage with that?

And if the call that requires chalking is good can plain old chalk board chalk be used? They had a stick of call chalk at the store but I cant imagine paying 9 bucks for one stick of chalk.

Thanks for the input end of this month is going to be my first turkey hunt.

Yes you can use plain old "chalk board" chalk on yer call, it werks jist fine.

The waterproof calls are nice if you live in an area that gets a lot of moisture during turkey season. Are they worth the extra bucks? That depends on you and your needs.

If I was to buy another box call, it'd definitely be one of the waterproof and no chalk models! I can't count the number of times that my box started squalking instead of yelping, usually when working a bird of course. A damp morning ain't the best for a box call and you can forget it entirely if it starts to rain.

Well, I've always been a traditionalist...about anything...but especially hunting.  I guess I finally came out of the closet.  Opening morning(last saturday) my huntiong buddy looked at my box call and said "what in the h___ is that thing" refering to my part PLASTIC, part wood, no-chalk call.  I think it was still dark enough he couldn't see my red face.  Latter that morning he said "Well, I sure hate to admit it...but, that THING sure does sound good. :-[ :-[ Walt
