Extractor question
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:52:42 AM »
I'm thinking of removing the extractor on my new Handi .308 as it hinders the smooth removal of brass from the chamber.  I'm thinking that the pressure still in the bore once the breech is opened will blow the casing out of the chamber, or at least far enough to get a better grip.

Any thoughts if anyone has done this?  If it isn't feasible, I have a back-up plan that I have worked up so that touching hot brass won't be a problem.

"I'm thinking of removing the extractor on my new Handi .308 as it hinders the smooth removal of brass from the chamber" This needs a bit more explaination, what problem(s) do you expierence?????

There is no "pressure" in the bore after the shot and your brass will not be pushed out of the chamber on it's own.

The brass is not to hot to touch when you lift it from the chamber, you will not burn your fingertips.

perhaps spend some time at a firing range with a knowledgable shooter or instructor who is familiar with Handis before you start to shoot your Handi rifle, and first learn the basics of shooting. These are fine and "fun guns..be careful, be safe, and enjoy them....<><....:)

OK thanks :)  This is my first singleshot, fired many an semi-auto, lever and bolt action rifle and a 5 time certificate recipient from the Iowa Hunter's Safety course in Iowa during the 80s  ;D  Just wondered if the basic physics applied to centerfire brass as it does with shotgun shells when opening the breech.

So this will bring me to plan b, creating a thumb jig with a hook that can help pull out the casing better.

MSP offers good advice, but if the extractor claw is hindering brass removal, it can be touched with a file or dremel to relieve heavy  contact with the case body. The extractor can also be modified similar to the FAQs extractor to ejector conversion info by shortening the length some and adding a small spring that will allow the extractor to lift the case out a bit further.  ;)

welcome aboard buddy, you will find many here willing to help on your trip through "Handi Land". It is good to see you are an expierenced shooter and just new to these single shot H&R/NEFs. What sort of problems are you having with your spent shell removal system (extractor)?

P.S. follow Tim's advice (always!!!). The extractor may just have to dressed down a bit if it is contacting the empty shell casing....<><....:)
