Interesting Cartridges

OK, the brass want to get something going here. Let's describe some of the rarer or interesting or unusual cartridges in our collections.

7mm Lechaufaux Pinfire. A friend's father took it and the revolver off a German officer during World War I.

.303 British, Mk IV, loaded with the hollow pointed and genuine Dum-Dum bullet.

.45 Colt Government or Short Colt. This round combines the narrow rim of the .45 Long Colt and the short case of the .45 Smith & Wesson.

I'll throw in my two bits' worth.  The neatest ones I have are (in my opinion anyway):

     -50 Crispin cartridge
     -an inside primed 50/70
-a 42 front loading cup primed cartridge
     - and a 31 Colt Thuer's patent, which like the 42 above was
loaded from the front of the cylinder.

Pictures of some of these are at http://www.cartridgecollectors.org/glossary.htm

I'm not a collector altho somewhere tucked back I have a few old rounds but all are kinda common.

Question for ya: Does that short colt round say "short Colt" on it? Mike Venterino says he has one that does. I no longer have the magazine article but he wrote it up and even had a photo of it. Said it was stamped short colt.

The cartridge in Mike's article was stamped 45 COLT, bottom, REM-UMC, top with a copper primer stamped with a U. His is the same as mine, but Winchester and Frankfort Arsenal made them too. Mike's article was in Shooting Times, November 1997, page 14. A couple of other references are:

 Sixguns by Keith, page 285.
Cartridges of the World, 9th Edition, page 306.

.297/230 Morris short an long

L. to r. .297 Morris long reload made form .22 Hornet case.  .297/230 Morris long. .297/230 Morris.  There is a .297/230 Morris extra long also.

Here is a standard .22LR to compare size.  The middle two cases are fire forming failure and success.  I had Had reamed the neck before fire forming and made a weak spot in the neck. I fire this cartridge in a Francotte Martini Cadet.
