Looking for some500gr/ 500 S&W data
« on: September 02, 2005, 01:34:58 AM »
Hello everyone! I have been lurking here for some time and this is a GREAT site! Thank you to all who have posted here, there is some AWESOME information!!!

Here is my question:
I am looking for some reloading data for the 500S&W for use in my Handi rifle. More specifically, the 500 gr Hornady bullets in brass w/Rifle primers.
I got some data from Hornady, but it is for pistol primers only. I know I could start low and work up, but would rather have some "official" data, from a reliable source.

I am thinking with its soft nose it should work wonderfully. I would think something like 1600 fps should work well and be easily attainable .

My intended uses are close range, Pigs, Bears, Moose and of course Mr Whitetail!!

Thank you in advance!!

I don't know if you e-mail me, but I have sent several e-mails out with load data. If you have Excel on your computer I can send you a bunch of data. If not I can try to cut and paste to an e-mail. :D

I prefer cast bullets in my 500Mag. I do shoot the 400 gr. Sierra and 350 Hornady some times. But the big 535 and 575 gr. case bullets are some of my favorite.  :D

Hornady sent me an e-mail with load data. If you e-mail me I will forward it to you. It is for the 240 and 300 gr. Hornady XTP Magnum bullets.

I did two things with my 500 S&W handi just this past weekend.  But - I have yet to load any 500 grainers.  1) it was shooting all over the place on my little 60 yard private range, giving groups in the 3-4 inch range with occassional fliers to boot!  So, I recrowned it with an 11-degree target crown (no small task because it is a composite barrel with a hard outer cylinder and softer metal on the inside - looks like H&R put a 50-cal liner inside a shotgun barrel or something).  This improved groups right away.  I then loaded the remington core lokt ultras (385 grain, semi-spitzer hollow points) over 39.5 grains of H110.  I also seated the bullets to 2.070 instead of the 2.050 listed in Hodgdon's data, and put on a pretty heavy crimp.  Bingo, a little over 1-inch at 60 yards for 3-shot groups!  However, this load kicks fairly hard and the cases come out sooty.  Not sure what is going on there, because this charge should expand the cases ok.  I imagine that the 500 grainers must kick like a Missouri mule...Very happy with my reborn handi rifle.  Have not used the chronograph on this load yet.

EDIT:  MY BAD - that was H110, not 4895.  Sorry.

Holy old threads batman!!!!  ::) ;D ;D I believe that was my first thread here!!!!  :o :o :o

I really wanted to use this bullet. But as hard as I tried, I couldn't find a load that shot well enough.

I have tried the Rem bullet but only a couple powders so far. I do also like this bullet. (And its price!!) So far my best accuracy and consistently accurate load has been with a 440Gr WFGC bullet and XMP5744 powder at about 80% attainable velocity. (Read Lite load)

Good luck with your loads and welcome to Gray beards!!

Yeah.  When I saw the date after I responded I thought "Geeeeez - I am about 4 years behind!" Anyway, I am happy with the results, especially with an inexpensive bullet with a little better BC.  I got to this thread because I searched for 500 S&W maggie data for the handi.  Still haven't figured out the soot part though.  I can't believe there is not enough pressure to seal off the chamber, especially with the relatively stout kick - and the bullet really smacks the target at 60 yards.  RM

I use H110 and Lil gun in my 500, and I have never had sooting trouble, but I also crimp all rounds even though I only shoot out of my handi.

michaelt454 - yes, I am getting sooty cases.  This is the first time this has happened.  From the little research that I did, this may relate to the case not expanding enough to fully seal against the chamber and then gas blow-by.  Nothing else looks unusual about the cases.  The primer looks right too.  Maybe I need to go up by 0.5 grain of H110 and see if it goes away.  I really was trying to keep pressures down for the sake of longevity of the action.  I have no idea exactly how to estimate what the pressure would be because it should be a nonlinear increase and I do not have loading software that can give me an estimate between minimum and maximum as listed by Hodgdon.  I would not be worried, except for the large case head area on the 500.  I see Hodgdon lists 42.5 grains of H110 with this bullet at a pressure of 47,300.

I have no idea as to why they would do that, it would seem that would be plenty powerful a load to satisfy the chamber.  Maybe you could try your hand with another powder? just to see what happens.

I wonder if the crimp prevented the mouth from expanding as much as it has in the past.  This time I put on a HEAVY crimp with the seater die.  In fact, some litte wiry shreds of brass came off the case mouth as it was pressed into the cannelure during crimping.  I have a Redding crimp die on order. Maybe I will be able to better control the crimp with that.  When I fired these without much of a crimp, I don't remember all this soot on the case.  I only went to the heavy crimp after reading Richard Lee's stuff about how important crimps can be for getting a smooth pressure curve.  Maybe I need to go back to a light crimp and see if I still have decent accuracy.  Thanks for your comments  ;).  This is the only pistol cartridge that I load, so I am feeling my way.  -R

My strong suspicion would be that it is an issue with the crimp.  Which issue I don't know.

It could be bad powder, I had that exact same problem in a 22-250, badly smoked cases as well as extremely low velocity for the load, Hodgdon replaced it. I shoot Lil'gun in my 500S&W Handi with all weight bullets up to 700gr, I prefer it for all my pistol chambered H&Rs.  ;)

I will have to get hold of some Lil Gun.  Have heard good things here and elsewhere about it.  Pressures look to be a little higher though for the same velocity range.  Again, I am only a little worried about the longevity of the 500 S&W handi action.  This little gun is a hoot to shoot!
