wood tent stove summit, vs four dog, vs cylinder stove

I am looking at stoves for a 12x12 or 12x14wall tent, i want to get something that will burn long enuf to get a good nights sleep and get good heat from the wood it burns, there is not much hard wood the places i hunt so i want something i can close down for a slow burn.

i cant find a difference between summit and cylinder stoves every one that have or has used them love them. right now i am really looking at the summit ridge but i don't know how much air comes in around the door. i have been told the four dog will use less wood to get the same heat as it has an air tight door and baffle. i would really like to hear from some one how has used the four dog stove. my parents have used a wood stove in there home for years that is air tight you shut it all down and the fire goes out or you can set the burn you want we had a stove in the shop that wasn't at all air tight you could see fire light around the door really had to watch how much wood you put in it would just burn it up and run you out.
is the four dog worth the extra money and weight?

If you want a stove that is easy to pack and carry then the ones you are listing are not it.  All of the stoves you are listing are very heavy.

Look into the Riley Trail Boss.  It is an airtight design and will hold a fire very well.  All of the accessories for the Trail Boss fit inside the firebox for transport.

The Summit Ridge package weighs 88 lbs and costs $339, plus $70 shipping.  The 4 Dog package weighs 78 lbs and costs $372, plus $50-60 shipping.  It is true that the 4 Dog is a bit more efficient than other stoves, but the Rileys are pretty good without a baffle.  The Cylinder Outfitter package weighs 81 lbs and costs $375, plus FOB.

The Riley Trail Boss Group 5 package weighs 52 lbs, costs $443, plus FOB, and has a fire box larger than that of the 4 Dog, Summit Ridge and Outfitter.

Consideration should also be given to smaller Riley stoves if you are in a 12'x14' tent.  The Riley Wrangler Group 5 package weighs 42 lbs and costs $372, plus FOB.  It is also airtight, all accessories will store inside the firebox and it will provide plenty of overnight heat for that size tent.

i know the stoves are heavy but i kinda lost to battle over tent size so this one will be for car camping until i can get pack animals, when or if i can get some pack animals i was looking at the riley colt. i am hoping some day i can get a range tepee for my self but right now i want to be able to keep my girl Friend comfortable for the late season elk hunt.

It is not that hard to make one out of a 35 gallon steel barrel.  Pipes will fit inside for transportation and a layer of dirt on the bottom prevent burn though.  There are usually a few packable stoves on EBay for sale.

all plans are going on hold my mother is going in to have heart surgery the 21 my budget was tight before it will be gone after a week out of town.  but i would like to know more about making one out of a 35 gal barrel..

btw i just bought a 12x12 wall tent with traditional poles from Davis tent. 2 doors 4 Windows didn't get Colorado doors and twice and many Windows as i wanted but didn't pay for any of the extras. now i hope i can find some really cheap substitute for a fly and floor, was planning spring Turkey hunt to break it in, doubtful.

I have a Sims, a 4-dog and a cylinder stove and have used them all.  Last hunting camp I used the 4 Dog and it did a great job, though my wood wasn't the best.  My tent is a 12X16X5 and it did a good job.  The Sims is a good stove that has lots of air leaks as it is collapsable unit.  I don't fold mine up and took some stove cement and sealed the cracks which lasted a few years, need to do it again.  I do have to get up a couple of time to keep the Sims going, but it will warm a 12X14 ok.  Last tent I used it in was a 10X10 and I had to keep the windows part open, but it didn't get any colder than freezing all night.  DP
