whats the best Moose call instruction video?
« on: September 15, 2008, 10:11:41 AM »
Well after only attracting cows to almost touching range (10 yds?), I need to learn to call bulls.  I have a Carlton video but could use more instruction.  I'm eager for advice on calling, calls, instructionals.  thanks

I've seen a ton of moose calling videos, but the one that I'm most impressed with by FAR, is "Love thunder and bull 2". It was made by Wayne Kubat, an Alaskan big game guide. They filmed it down in Koyukuk.

He also sell the bull magnet. A fiberglass cone, made to carry your voice out, but it better serves as a scrape sound on sapplings and brush. I've seen it work firsthand with more than one bull come to us last year.

thanks Pete,  I'll find one of those videos - could be helpful since I live in Bristol Bay. I've seen those fiberglass cones in Anchorage stores but it looked too bulky to carry around. But if it brings in a bull that would be worth it.  Thanks again.

I'm eager for more advice too.  Did anybody hear the Soldotna guide Dilley on Public radio.  Guess with Sarah Palin in the lime light everybody wants to know about moose hunting and moose stew.

Great thing to have a lady hunter getting publicity I think.

379 I just received Love Thunder & bull # 1 and 2 today - they ship fast!  Oh and if you don't mind the VHS tape style, they have them on sale for only about $9 so I got 2 tapes for the price of 1 DVD. Watched #1 this evening and already see some things I've done wrong - cow calls too short, too low and not loud enough.

Also learned that a friend of mine called in a moose this fall with one of the cones they sell.  So my partner and I are going to buy a couple.  Thanks for the recommendation.  Got some practicing to do while the rut approaches.  Should have tried this weekend but had the kids and dog with me.  We did find a wad of moose hair in an area that was trampled a little.  Maybe the sparring has begun. Now if it would quit raining for a few days.  At least the weekend was sunny.

Good deal! The vid is informative as well as entertaining IMO

As for the cone call, every one of them has it's own slight idiocincracies in sound, since they're hand made. As sportmans wharhouse in Anchorage (or whereever) you can pick through them and select the one that sounds best to you. I like the sound they make while scraping the bark on trees.

The most realistic call I've seen & heard is one you can easily make yourself.  Get yourself a regular size coffee can, poke a hole in the bottom, and run a leather shoelace through it.  Knot the end.  (ca. 12-15") To make the call, soak the leather and run your pinched fingers from end to end.  The best video I've seen is actually a show I taped on Public tv called "In the company of moose" by a french/canadian artist named Giesel ......?  I'm glad I taped it because I have not seen it rerun in years.
