BH209 & Metrics Unlimited vs. 777 & 25ACP
« on: March 24, 2009, 04:46:00 PM »
I picked up a 25ACP plug a year or so ago and at the same time switched to using loose 777.
I've been very pleased with the overall performance of that combo since then.
However I'm thinking of giving the Metrics Unlimited breech plug and BH209 a try based on all the fanfare in this forum.

Just a couple questions about BH209:

1. As 777 is more potent than Pyrodex, is BH209 any more or less potent than an equal measure of 777?
2. Is there any load/velocity data available for BH209?
3.  One of the claims in using the 25ACP system was the benefit of using small rifle primers vs 209 primers for the reasons stated below:
.

Too much energy:

A Thompson Center Encore was used to test the ignition energy between the 209 primers and the .22 Hornet rifle primers. A clean damp patch was push down to the bottom of the barrel with the ramrod.  A 209 primer was ignited forcing the ramrod to jump 6”-8” up the barrel. The same experiment was done with the .22 Hornet with it's small rifle primer and the ramrod moved less than 1".

Eliminated unexplained flyers:

Personally, I believe these flyers were the result of the 209 actually lifting the sabot off the powder charge simultaneous with igniting the powder. The much milder Small Rifle primer of the Hornet case ignites the powder just as instantly but lacks the energy to move the sabot and bullet off the powder charge therefore eliminating the flyers.

I can't really argue this because consistency and accuracy have been outstanding since making the ACP switch.  I'm just a bit concerned that going back to say a hot Federal 209 primer and BH209 may to some degree affect accuracy (flyers) and outweigh the inherent benefits of less blow back and not cleaning between shots.

Thanks

I'm  shooting 470 gr. T/C Maxi Hunters over two 777 50 gr. pellets with the Metrix 209 plug and getting 100 yard clover leaves.  I'm not shooting an iddy bitty sabot that may well jump.  The 470s don't go anywhere but home, true......and they kill at the end.  I'm a happy camper.

If it Aint Broke, why try to fix it?  That being said I use loose triple 7 in my huntsman and sidekick.  My sidekick has the 25 acp the huntsman does not.  I am switching the huntsman to the metrics unlimited plug to eliminate the blow back and to also eliminate the primer carriers.  But the sidekick wilkl continue with the 25 acp. I shoot 90 grains of fffg and a 250 grain 44 cal lead bullet I mold myself.  it works very well on whitetails and I see no reason to replace it.  I shoot the same load in the huntsman.  This way I will have the best of both worlds.  They are both 7/8 , so I can interchange and play all I want.
