Rebarreling a Browning Model 71
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:55:43 AM »
I'm asking for a friend, who has a Japanese made Browning Model 71 in .348. He wants to rebarrel to 45-70. Does anyone know if the barrel threads are English or Metric?

Thanks for any help

If it was me, I'd keep the .348 in original condition.

Since it is the Miroku 71, why not put out an ad to simply trade your 71 for an 1886 or 86EL ?  Cheaper, easier and you may just make another trader happy.

Can't tell you about threads.  What I can tell you is that Browning uses Loc-Tite (or equivalent) threadlocker on their rifle barrels (ok, at least the A-bolts.  Don't see why they'd do it on them and nothing else), so you'll need to apply enough heat to break that threadlocker free.  If you don't, you stand a very good chance of destroying the threads in the receiver.

Thanks for thoughts/info.

As I said not for me but for friend (smith/machinist), who has the 45 caliber barrel and can easily thread if English threading, metric would be more difficult with his lathe. He just wants to know before starting the project

Here is an Article by Jim Taylor:

About 1/4th the way down you will see a picture of the difference of the threads from an original Winchester 71 and the Browning, I would say the browning is metric.
I second the recommendation to find someone to trade for their 1886.
