New .45
« on: March 18, 2009, 07:27:55 AM »
I have been looking at picking up a new .45 pistol, but I'm not sure which one I want to buy.  I thought I had the choice narrowed down to either a Springfield XD or a FNP-45.  However, I recently had a chance to look over a Taurus PT-1911.  I've always liked the 1911 styling, and the price on the Taurus is pretty good.  I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about the Taurus, and I've had some people tell me that their quality control has been getting better lately. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which one I should go with?  Also, how do Taurus 1911's rate and how do they compare to Springfield's line of 1911's?

The Taurus PT1911 has been fine for me,  Honestly, I've spent a lot more and didn't get as good a pistol as I have now.

IMO you have nothing to worry about with the PT1911.

I bought a PT-1911 last December and just traded it for an Para-Ordnace OPS.  Two reasons: First the money I spent on the taurus was supposed to be for a carry gun.  The most important reason why I traded it was becuase while the gun was cold(unfired or temperature), it had a problem feeding the first round out of the magazine.  It also happened once or twice while shooting at an indoor range also. After I put the first mag through it never had a problem feeding.

Other than that it was a great gun to shoot, IMO you usually get what you pay for though.

Good Luck, let me know if you have any questions.

Biohazard:  how many rounds did you have through that Taurus before you let it go and did you ever try any other magazines when you went to chamber the first round?  Also, did you let the action of the pistol chamber the first round solely under recoil spring tension or did you 'guide' the slide forward manually?  What level power were the loads you were using and were they ball ammo or something else?

As I read your note, the only problem was with feeding the first round out of that (or one particular?)magazine, correct???

I have handled a couple of the new Taurus 1911s and they look and feel like quality pistols.  They have all the bells and whistles of the higher end pieces yet they are still 1911s brand spankin' new from the factory and I am absolutely certain that Taurus does not impart the fine finishing touches on the innards that someone like Kimber or Para might.  So with that in mind I would not have slid that Taurus into my belt for a carry gun until I had about 500 rounds downrange.  It's almost too bad you no longer have the pistol as I would have liked to help resolve that 'first round' problem.

The Taurus mags are a bit strange. Or at least mine are. They won't lock in to my Kimber Pro, yet they work in my other 1911s. The two mags that came with mine work fine, actually all the mags I have tried work fine in the Taurus. The OP's problems were magazine related, I'd almost wager. A minor, easily corrected problem for sure. I have yet to have any problems with my Taurus. I wouldn't have a problem carrying mine if I were carrying a 1911. Mikey, the internal finish is quite good, as you would expect from a CNC machined forging.

I would never own a Tauras. I would save up a little more money and buy better. No Professional gunsmiths build Tauras 1911,s ( or any Tauras ) for competition. That should say alot. I would trust my life on only a better gun.

Mikey,

I had about 700-750 round down the barrel before letting it go.  I tried loading the first round both ways, one allowing the tension spring to do all the work and secondly with me trying to guide the round in.  I was shooting factory ammo (230gr FMJ either remmington UMC, blazer brass, Winchester target rounds, and some FNH). I also shot one box of JHP just to see if that made a difference.  The feeding problem was across the board, I tried a mags by colt and springfield with no resolve. To try and explain it further, it was like the round wasn't being released by the mag and the bullet was hitting the ramp and sticking instead of feeding into the chamber.

Like I said earlier, it was a great shooter after the barrel warmed up a bit. overall, I am still satisfied with my decision to trade it in because when I bought it was on sale, and the folks at gander mountain gave me damn near full price for what I paid.

On a sidenote, I took the para out yesterday and put 150 rds through...I am in love with it! I will still probably put another 300-400 rounds through before I feel comfortable using it as a carry weapon.  I thought with the shorter barrel(3.5") I would have a hard time reaquiring the target for a rapid second shot, but the weight of the pistol itself is almost that of a full size 1911 which really helped the recoil.

I've got about 700 rounds through mine, 600 of them handloads of 5.8 grains of unique under a 230 grain lead RN.  No problems to report.  I'm starting to "find" the correct sight picture.

I'm not crazy about the 8 ball sights, but told myself, this time I'm not changing anything for at least 1000 rounds.

Honestly, most of the pistols out have crappy sights IMO.

While I have a perceived liking for fixed Heinie slant pros, I really must admit that any sight is better than I am. ;) :'( :-[

Well, I'm very happy w/ my FNP-45. Eats everything I feed it. My Kimber is much more fussy. Also, the FN comes w/ 3 mags from the factory. Easy takedown, accurate, includes a rail.

The Kimber's for sale. Enough said?

I've had my PT 1911 for over a year now, very pleased with  it, accurate and reliable. My other 45's are Ruger P90 and P345 and a M&P45 which are all reliable and accurate...........

I have three 45s a Ruger P90, a Taurus PT1911 and a Kimber elite. I find the Taurus and the Kinber on par both in function, reliability and accuracy.  The kimber cost me several hundred dollars more though.  My most reliable 45 (not a jam, malfunction nor misfire after over 1000 rounds is the Ruger.  It shoots anything I put in it.  Can't say the same for the other two pistols I own.

I used to have a xd 45.  It was an awesome handgun and 13 rounds of 45acp is plenty.  I couldn’t believe how accurate it was for a 4” 45.  I had to sell mine, but hope to someday get another one.

As far as a cheaper 1911, I’ve read a lot of good about the rock island 1911’s, but haven’t read too many positive reviews about the Taurus 1911’s.
