Farthest anyone has ever shot a groundhog?
« on: April 29, 2009, 04:29:59 AM »
With my WMR, I would take most of my shots from 120 to 130yds with the main goal being to quickly thin down the crop destroying varmints.

With my .22-250, around 310yds is about right for shooting because of the rise or fall of the terrain along with obstructions like fence rows to the tall grasses along a drainage or even the woods or wooded fingers that may be in the way. I do have a few places that I can squeeze off an honest 400yd shot and I cannot say that I have ever shot one beyond this.

I could improve on this but would have to follow a tip learned from J Charmichael...I guess that those boy's would put a picnic table in the back of a pickup truck for some great shooting. Shame that I never owned a picnic table not that I ever had the desire to load one in a truck!...now a day's I am happy to shoot at 100yds max and will use a handgun for the most part.

My season opener last week was one of the farthest I have ever shot one with a .22 LR. Rifle was sighted in for 50 yds, so I had to take a couple "spotter" shots into the gusting breeze at 2 o'clock. Then I hit him in chest and plop ! It was 125 yards. Shown with rifle & woodchuck is walking/shooting stick.

Rifle: stock 795 Marlin (self camoed stock)

  Scope:Tasco 2.5 X 20  (shotgunscope)

  Ammo: CCI Velociters

Not sure how far, but I held an estimated 6' high with my .220 swift and 52gr HP at 3900 fps.  I really didn't know I had hit the chuck, but I did notice he was no longer moving / feeding as he had been previously.  After a while, I decided I had gotten him.  After a long walk I confirmed...dead chuck.

This was in the days before ranger finders and mil dot scopes...just lots of shooting and Kentucky windage.

My longest shot was 245 lasered yards with a 17HMR. It took me 4 shots to hit him, starting with too much hold over and then bringing the cross hair down each shot. It was a lucky head shot and the last bullet I was going to send his way that day. I met someone that made a one shot kill at 300yds on one and two other people witnessed it. Both shots were really streatching the little 17 caliber!
My longest shot was with a 243Win at 463 yards using a 75gr Vmax bullet. I carry a range chart for scope clicks, so I was dialed in on him before pulling the trigger.

:D My longest on a chuck was only 424 yards.  :( Got him with a Rem. Lam. .22-250 and Leupold  6-20x with dots to 600 yards. Have a couple pals that got in to chuck shooting in the 60's. They used target .300's one guy got one at 800 plus and his pal one at 1200 plus. Of course this was very specailzed shooting. Don't get to hunt chucks much now as I am seldom in the area they live during the summer. Made some 600 plus shot on coyotes though 8)

  Good shooting guys..
As I said, that was my longest with a .22 long rifle..my mags & 17 HMR go farther. I rarely use centerfire on woodchucks..

I rolled one at 180 yards with a Charles Daley sinle shot "Chipmonk" .22 long rifle, 4x Bushnell, shooting 37gr Winchester HPs but he got to his hole. Just earlier today I got one at about 300 yards with a Rossi single shot thin barrel .223, a 3-9 Simmons, and shooting S&B 55gr FMJs (they're cheap and they shoot good)... he DIDN'T get to his hole. ;)
