Is there much difference in accuracy for the .223 between the 20 and 22" barrels.
Thinking about sending in my frame for some barrels.

Unless weight is a problem - get the 22" barrel. the 20" is a light weight barrel. While they can shoot well, the heavier weight barrels seem to shoot better over all. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I'm thinking about the #223 (22" w/scope mount rail) vs #SL3(20" w/scope mount rail), not the #823 "Ultra" 223 or the #SY3 (20" w/open sights).

It looks like the same barrel to me, just 2" shorter/longer.....?
The 22 Hornet (don't want) and the .234 (already got) are also offered in the 20" lengths.

The barrel diameter and countour on the 20" youth is well below that of the normal 22"  ... And  Tim stop me if it has changed , the 20" barrel is a 1 in 12 twist rate while the normal 22" standard countour is a 1 in 9 twist    ..   This can limit just how heavy you can go with the wt. of the projectile or how lite of a bullet you can use ..

My 22" 223 bull barrel loves 60,68,69 &75 gr bullets ( 1 in 9 )   My Ruger Target Grey 223 bolt rifle ( 1 in 12 ) doesnt like but a few 55 gr bullets , and preffers the lighter ones on average.

Hope this helps you out a little ,

All 20" barreled .223 barrels are Superlight contour, current production barrels are 1:9", the last run of .223 Superlight barrels was the first of the 1:9", so there are a lot of the 1:12" twist barrels still around, any factory Superlight or Compact .223 rifle made 2007 or before will be 1:12", 2008 could be either depending on when it was made, an accessory barrel will be 1:9" now unless they dig up an older barrel which they do occasionally,  so as with the other .223 barrels, check it with a rod as explained in the FAQs. ;)

Tim

EDIT: I forgot ::), I think you can count on ejector SL barrels being 1:12", extractor 1:9".

Also just to throw some more confusion into the mix don't be surprised to find a Hornet bbl with 1-16twist it happened the last time H&R was aquired. It would not surprise me to see that happen to a barrel that had not been stamped Sportster yet.Kurt

Success! I am confused.

So which one do I want (read less finicky barrel)?  The 20, 22 or is the 1:9 preferred over the 1:12?

Are all 22" a 1:12?

Nope, only recent production are 1:9", ALL older barrels are 1:12", but there's no specific cutoff year as to when they switched, they didn't switch all at once and they switched back and forth, the only way to know what twist the barrel of a 22" or 24" barrel made 2005-2007 is, is to check it with a rod, they'll all shoot good with the right loads, just depends on what you shoot in it, the 1:12" barrels won't likely shoot bullets heavier than 55gr well, the 1:9" should.  ;)
