Nylon 66
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:46:37 AM »
Was cruising internet today and came across an old Nylon 66.. Man did that bring back memories. First rifle purchase my dad allowed me to make. Brought back a flood of memories of my dad teaching me how to shoot and the long summer days on school vacation plinking at the sand pit by the river with my buddies until it got to dark none of us could see to shoot cans and bottles anymore. I remember my buddy chip stealing a cantaloupe from his mothers kitchen just so we could  destroy it. We set it up at the top of the sandpit and tried to shoot it as it rolled all the ay downto the floor of the pit. most nights We would end up walking 1/2 mile home in the dark after an all day shooting marathon... man those 66's were a blast back in the day.
How may of you owned one?

Back in the 60's my cousin had a "66" just after their debut, and that thing would work with about any ammo he shoved into it.    Most of the 22 rimfire ammo on the market now won't work well in even the best semi-auto rifles made.   I think it is loaded to such low pressure levels that the blow-back actions won't overcome the recoil spring and then it jams.   My S-I-L has a "66" made in about 1977 and he thought his needed a good cleaning and disassembled it down to small parts and we just about couldn't figure out how to get it back together again, but the problem wasn't dirt but again weak ammo.   To bad we can't handload rimfire stuff.

I have the Mohawk 10C version.  Bought it back around 1974 from K-Mart.  It is a clip model.  I don't ever recall having jam or FTF.  I still have the box and paperwork.

It's my wife's favorite .22 rifle.

My Dad has one.
It has a tube in the buttstock to load the ammo.
Nice little gun and shoots great. ;D
I think they called the color "mohawk brown"

I've got two, one my dad bought me in the 60's, mohawk brown, and one I bought my stepson in the early 80's.  I still shoot them both, usually the mohawk brown.  It goes to the range with me most every time, and I have no clue how many rounds this gun has fired but it's been 10's of thousands.....

I had a Mohawk(brown) back in the late 70's. I liked it so much that i bought a Black Diamond model in the mid-80's. I cut the barrel down to just over 16 inches, made and silver soldered a flash suppressor on it, put on a 4x Tasco scope, and installed a BMF activator on the trigger guard. It was the sweetest, neatest little machinegun wannabe!!! And it would shoot like the dickens!!! It would spit out all 16 rounds in a little over a second. And it was perfectly legal. Guess that's what happens when you have a new toy and too much time on your hands!!! For some reason or other ,I ended up selling or trading it for something else and I regret it to this day. Wish they (Remington) would reintroduce the Model 66 again. I bet it would be a real good seller at the right price. Cheap to shoot and very accurate.

I've got a close relative to the 66, it's a 10c in Mohawk Brown. My grandfather bought it new at the town hardware store and I still have all the orginal paper work on it. After he passed away it was left to me, I can't begin to tell you the thousands of round that have been through that gun! It still shoots like a champ ;D

Another brown stock butt feed model here. Mine was purchased new in 1971 for $69 if I remember correctly. This was kind of expensive as you could get a Marlin Glenfield complete with scope for around $38 at that time. The thing about the 66 was that it would not jam!...I see them at the gunshows now & again and they go for $200-$235. Mine is not for sale and it will probably out live me.

There is an easy cure for this. Simply pull the plastic bolt handle straight out and remove the two screws in the reciever housing. That cover will now pull straight off and you can easily get at the feed ramp, the bolt slide, and the central bolt rod & spring for some easy cleaning. I have only had to do this less than a handful of times over the years though. I suspect that your brothers may have been unshot for a very long period and that carbon had dryed out & setup hard.

I bought a brown one at a police auction back in the early 80s.  Think I paid $25.00, it had a broken stock and no one wanted to bid on it.  I called Remington and told them what I had, they said send all the metal in and they would replace the stock.  I took it apart and sent all the metal it to Remington.  I also asked if they could replace the Brown stock with a Black one.  Four weeks later I received the gun back, completely cleaned and with a beautiful new Black stock.  Stuck in the the vault and forgot about it.  In 89 my son was born.  In 99 he found it in the vault and wanted to take it out shooting.  By the time he was 12 he practically lived with that thing in his hand.  I buy what ever .22rf ammo that is on sale, either bricks or bulk packs.  The gun has never failed to shoot everything we put in it.  That little gun has been responsible for hundreds of grouse being put on the table.  It's also been used to take Rabbits, Squirrels, Foxes, Groundhogs, Coyotes, a Turkey, one wayward Goat, and many stray dogs.  Now my son is 20, and he feels that is his gun since he has used it so much.  I won't argue, he's the one that breathed life back into it.  I put it in the vault and forgot it, he took it out and used it.

PS  In it's earlier life it was used to shoot three people.  This is according to the paperwork attached to the gun when I bought it.  Nothing was said about their survival or condition.  Goes to show even a good gun can be used for bad purposes, then rehabilitated.

I have one of the all-black (w/white diamond) Brazilian-made ones.  No hating, please.  These were still made by Remington (through a subsidiary) using Remington tooling; just in Brazil.  It was my first firearm, and I love it today as much as I did then.  Made the huge mistake of cleaning the barrel once and the accuracy went straight down the toilet.  It's much better now with a few 'fouler' rounds down the tube.  :)

When my Dad died I got his.  I remember waiting by the road for the mailman in the late 50s for it to come from Montgomery Wards.  Dad liked the ads with the gun frozen into a block of ice, but we lived in California so I don't know what good it did.  I learned to shoot with that gun, and still treasure it.  One of my sons will get it when I decide it is time to leave.
