How did I do?
« on: March 19, 2009, 11:16:57 PM »
I won this bid,  don't know if the " Built in compensator" is a factory option or a add on.  Is this $205 a fair price? And are there any Quirks for a 2004 .270 Handi?  Would this be a Ultra?

You my friend did very well. These are the UltraComp models that are discontinued and are some of the most accurate barrels produced by H&R. The Muzzle break is very well done and it's hard to tell where the thread seam is.  They can be taken off if you like by just a good twist usually. You will probably need to deburr the flash holes in the break once you get it as some metal may still be there.
They are loud, but work well.
I have had 2 and both were the 30-06 versions, I love them.
Enjoy your new toy.

Uhh Tim . I think you removed more than the auction link, I did not see the price in his post.

Or is it just me?

My humble apology for posting the online auction link...me bad.  I pick it up tomorrow, I hope it's in as good of shape as it appears/stated.  I have not had too good of luck with 2 previous Handis in .223 and a Rossi in 7.62X39 and one in .243.  They all needed allot of tinkering/reloading to get... O.K. groups.  Maybe this one will shoot great out of the box.  Thanks for the positive/optimistic replies!  Anyone have any pet loads for .270 Win?

I picked it up today... It is brand new, never was fired.  They told me a dealer brought in in for a consignment auction.  There was no wear on shelf/latch the ejector/extractor or on the hammer where the spur locking screw would bite in; the spur was in a sealed plastic bag.  Im convinced it was never fired since it left the factory in 2004.  Wonder why he couldn't sell such a "highly coveted" gun?  Oh well, I hope to shoot it next week, thanks for the handload recipee Quick,  How about a good off the shelf brand of ammo to get me started?

Well I got out this weekend and put 8 shots down range with the Ultracomp. After making scope adjustments at 25, 50, and 75 yards I shot 1- 3 shot group at 75 yards that measured 2 inches... not so good but better than what I have experienced with 4 other brake open singleshots that I owned.  I used 130 gr. Remmington Coreloks.  A also was following barrel brake in procedure and pulling a wet patch then a dry patch after every shot.  I will also admit that the muzzle blast did startle me... I think I would prefer removing the recoil reducing thingy and live with the kick, that thing was LOUD!  I realize I only shot 8 rounds and I need to shoot it alot more to really asses what it can do.  Would these barrels benefit from the barrel polish/Flitz treatment?  And how about the theory that they get better accuracy with sending 50 to 100 bullets down range to brake the barrel In?

I think you'll find if you let the bore get a little fouled, it will tighten those groups up a bit, but flitzing the bore won't hurt anything, you can always do that later tho. Shoot it fouled next time and see if the groups get better.  ;) I've only done that shoot and clean thing a few times, I think it's a waste of time and money for the most part, some barrels may benefit from it, but I think flitzing the bore is a better way to spend time on the barrel, spend the range time shooting instead of cleaning!!  ;)
