optics for 45/70 bbl?
« on: March 27, 2009, 03:09:04 AM »
the stock sight on my new to me 45/70 bbl suck.

im thinking either a 1.5x scope or a red dot. id like to keep it compact, the rifle is real nice and maneuverable, id like to keep it like that with something compact.

I'm struggling with same issue.  My Bushnell banner is whacking me in the face with every shot.  Whatever you decide, make sure you have plenty of eye relief.  I think that's how I will go;  I'm looking for 5" of eye relief.  I also have a red dot, but am not real confident using it in case of longer range shot possability.

What about Nikon's 2x-7x shotgun scopes-----They have a decent amount of eye relief with a small tube.
I have one on my Encore and like it.

I use a 2x pistol scope mounted on a Weaver 92A base at the rear sight location.  A shotgun scope mounted at the normal scope location would have adequate eye relief, as would a good red dot.  There are a lot of shotgun scopes to choose from.

Right now I have a 1-4X Leupold Vari-X 11 on my 22" barreled Contender carbine but have also had a 2-7X Leupold Compact and a 2.5-8X Leupold Vari-X 111 on it.

All worked great.

with  the stock  you probly  have the scope will be  TOO  high  once you clear  the hammer spur
the red dot  with  its unlimited eye releive can be set ow in front of the hammer

same with  a pistol or intermedeate scout scopes
i just like the red dot better.....just keep back up battery with the ammo or taped to sling

Here is what I use on my 45-70. It's a Simmons 4X32 ProDiamond shotgun scope. It only weighs 8 ozs. and is probably 1/3 smaller than a full size scope. It has 5" of eye relief and is made to withstand the recoil of a 3 1/2" turkey load. The ProDiamond reticle is heavy on the outside but fine inside the diamond. This makes it work well in heavy cover on moving targets (hogs) and on targets standing in a open field (deer). It holds it's zero great, even with a 405 grain Cast Performance bullet moving at 1750 fps. Plus, you could get them for less than $100 last time I priced one.

The bottom barrel/scope is the 45-70. The other two, for comparision, are a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40 on the MZ, and a Nikon Monarch 3-9X40 on the 7-08 barrel that's on the frame.

Looks like you needed the extra high rings.  How does that affect the way the rifle fits your sight plane?  Do you need to adjust your alignment with shoulder/head?

Nope, those are standard High rings. No need to adjust your hold or head alignment. If you close your eyes and shoulder it the scope is dead on when you open your eyes. Sighting that rifle, with any barrel of those three, is as easy as my Remington 700. I have no problem getting my thumb between the scope and the hammer to cock it either. In fact, the Simmons scope on the 45-70 is the easiest of the three to cock.

I like T/C's 3-9x40 scope with their tough sob rings and mount.  Plenty of eye relief.  Fun to shoot, and with the guys at Black Hills ammo making some hot .45-70 loads, it makes a fantastic hunting rig.
