I am considering getting a factory 223 barrel but I am undecided as to which one to purchase.I'm looking for accuracy and carrying balance.

Take your pick. Most all of them shoot very well or can be made too. I have had 2 one Bull and the other standard and they both shot/shoot good. The 24" Ultra and 22" Bull barrels maybe a little more accurate but the weight helps them out alot. If you are going to be carring it around then I believe you would be pleased with just a standard 22" barrel.

Curt, are you referring to different twist rates?  I've seen a lot of people in the classifieds asking about twist rates as if there is some concern of accuracy of one verses the other, as if one is better than the other.

For a carry gun i would stay with a regular contour. If you are a static shooter than get a heavy contour. I really think a bull barrel is more heat tolerant. Therfore more shots between cooldowns.

Black ,

The twist is relivent to the wt. of bullet the barrel is more likely to stabilize and create its best accuracy with .. I have a 1 in 12 , 26" barrel that doesnt like anything over 55 gr wt.

My 1 in 10 loves the middle road 53 to 62 ( 62 is its favorite ) Thou as every rule has an exception this barrel does too , I found one 75 gr moly coated match HPBT offering from black hills that this rifle loves . any and all other handloaded or store bought in the 75 range ? Nada wont hold below a buck shot pattern with it .

All of my 1 in 9s like the 55 on up to the 75 gr range with excellent accuracy ..The Handi standard contour and Bull are 1in9 .. Tim (Quick ) will need to chime in as to what they are using in the 24 " , 1in9 or a slower twist..

My other halves father has an older Savage 24F predator with a 1 in 14 that doesnt want anything to do with a 55 gr bullet but we're gonna start on reloading for it and we're going to start with a 45 gr bullet to see if we can make it happ'in cap'in  ..If not might have to resort to a 40 gr.

As far as the accuracy and weigth of the H&R 223 barrels .. Go with the Bull barrel Dawson ... Me and my other half have toted one around on a number of hunts and it does real well on the accuracy end of it  ( prefferably 75gr Hornady TAP ammo) with under dime size groups at 100 and the over all weight of the rifle isnt bad at all.

Twist rates are listed in the FAQs, but any late model barrel tween 2005-2007 could be either 1:9 or 1:12", extractor barrels will likely be 1:9", but the only way to know for sure is check it as described under the twist rates.

Go with the fluted bull.  The flutes cut the weight down some but still retain the more mass than a standard barrel giving better accuracy.

Of course this is just my uneducated, 2cents worth.  This and a couple of bucks might get you a cup of coffee...maybe. :)

Hey, thanks for clearing that up Default.  Ya learn something new every day!  :)  I have two .223 barrels for my T/C (Thompson Contender) and they seem to work very well with 55 grain bullets.  However, I recently fired some 50 grainers from the rifle barrel and I couldn't believe the accuracy I got from it.  I'll have to look up or measure the twist rate on it.  I've been considering adding a Handi barrel in .223 to my H&R frame but I've been hesitant on buying one due to the discussions on twist rates.  I'm so accustomed to shooting heavier bullets (30 cal to 45 cal) that I didn't think there was much of a difference in twists for those little tiny chunks of lead those .223's spit out.  ;)  Add to it that I've really only been working with the .223 for about two years.

Thanks again!

Thanks for all the input.I have a plastic stocked Handi in 45-70 cut down to 16 1/4" with a weaver K-4 and was thinking about adding another barrel for alighter more available round for walking around gun/trunk gun/SHTF gun with an inexpensive(used) quality 3x-9x scope. ;D
