Worm for 1" Bore
« on: April 01, 2009, 03:01:58 PM »
I'll be using tin foil "powder bags" in my 1" smooth bore Dahlgren. I have a few worms that fit a .620 bore, would there be any problems using them for a 1" bore?

I see You have some of the european Civil War era import wipes/worms

you might be able to take one and heat it up and expand it's size to what you need,

do you have any of the longer style?

Hey Allen, no i just have the short threaded ones. I'm thinking they will work fine just the way they are, for bores sized 3/4"-1"
They don't cost much and easy to find, mine came from Dixie Gun Works.

I never thought about checking with Dom, figured he was too busy building cannons and mortars.
Now i'm thinking this topic should be removed. I don't want to be talking about musket worms and cause Dom to lose any implement sells.

It's your call Dom and DoubleD about removing this topic.

 Lance,

Thanks for the tip. I'll be getting one of those for my 12 ga cannon  ;)

Michael,   We are about 80% sure you are just kidding with this posting.  If you are, as we suspect, then ignore all the rest of this.
However, if you are serious and really want something gratis, for nothing, then we will tell you what our answer would be, as we would never presume to speak for Carpenter's Replica Artillery.  Our answer would be the same as the answer you would get if you were to ask for FREE automobile service.  Depending upon which country you were in at the time, you could expect answers similar to these:  no, z'adny, non, nein, nr, ne, nao or ingen.  Now, if you were ordering a cannon from us or something substantial, then we would certainly consider making a worm for a modest cost.  Bonne chance!

Respectfully,

Tracy and Mike

For smaller caliber cannons (.47 cal.) 'Track of the Wolf' sells a well made worm, and ball puller at a reasonable price. I recently bought both for the .50 cal. naval gun that I've been working on; they come with a choice of either male or female thread.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Rick and Lance,   Yes we do occasionally use "Duct tape on a stick".  If you forget your authentic worm and find yourself without one at the range someday, just go to your car or truck's tool box and grab a roll of duct tape.  Wrap the tape once around the end of a dowel or rifle cleaning rod, then twist it so the sticky side is facing outwards and wrap three times around, covering the end of the rod and about 3" of the rod's length.  Then twist again and secure the tape's end by wrapping it round the rod a little lower.  The "Sticky Worm" you now have with extract ALL of the aluminum foil pieces from about five cannon shots, then you must place a fresh piece of tape over the top portion of this worm to renew it.  Sticky worm FIRST, then wet AND dry sponge afterwards.

"Steak on a Stick" at the Renaissance Festival in Larkspur, Colorado is much more appetising, but take a tip from our Canadian friends; watch the Red-Green Show just once, and you will be convinced that there really are one thousand uses for this stuff!

Regards,

Mike and Tracy

I had "Gator on a Stick" yesterday at the annual "Swampfest" festival here.
