Hey where can I get...
« on: March 15, 2009, 07:28:55 AM »
Hello, where can I get a 1/2 scale cannon for a good price without getting ripped off? I have always loved Civil war cannons. It also needs to be a shooter....Thank you.

Jay,

I split your topic off fromt he other post because it had nothing to do with it and is topic unto itself.

If you looking for a cannon the place to start looking is in the stickies at the top of this forum.  The one you want is this one: GBO Sponsors & Internet Blackpowder Cannons related links

THe first post in that sticky is the list of our sponsors.  Start with them.  I am sure one of them can provide you with what you want.

Welcome to the board.

WELCOME to the board!

I agree with DD.  The sponsors that have gravitated to us here are quality folks with quality products.  (There is a real-life quality when one subjects one's products to open review in a public forum.)  Read a few pages into the forum and you'll see that too.

What style of mortar/cannon are you most interested in?

I like Civil war era cannons the most. I guess if I am going to be shooting round projectiles a 6 pounder would be the ticket. Ease of transportation -the break down factor- is important. Either 1/3 scale or 1/2 scale. I am willing to spend around $500-600 for a barrel.

I do like the looks of the Revolutionary War Howitzers.....

What's your budget for carriage or supplies to build your own?  It's easy to spend as much on a pre-build carriage as you do on the gun.

Like $300-400 for accessories.

I just want a quality shooting barrel first with sights. I think golf ball size is a good size for 100 yard shooting. How much does the ball weigh and how fast would it be going? I realize barrel length and powder charge are factors, but ball park figures.

I haven't chronographed ANY cannon balls, but my 1-7/8" bore will put golf balls (1.70") out to the 100yard mark without being seen - 4 or 5 at a time.

For a person who focuses on mortars, that's fast.  Your perspective may be different.

How much does the ball weigh and how fast would it be going?

A lead golf ball weighs almost exactly one pound.  Velocity from a flat fire gun is hard to tell but if velocity is the most important thing, you should be looking at a .220 Swift or a .17 Remington, not a muzzle loading cannon.

I just wanted to add my two cents.

Go to the people listed in the sponsors in this board.  DO NOT GO TO EBAY TO BUY A SHOOTABLE CANNON OR MORTAR!!!!

To may people have lost limbs and their lives by going on the cheap.  Someone on ebay is about to tell you anything to make the sale.

I am no metals expert nor an artillery expert.  I have been around them for many years but I will never feel that I am an expert.

So the best bet is to buy from someone that is an expert.

Enough said.

Brokenpole - just one thing to say about what you just said - you've got two feet planted firmly on the ground and your head's screwed on straight.

OMG catwhisper...don't let people at work find out about that.  They will start expecting more out of me.  :D

Most of the expierence comes from sitting around camp fires and listening to stories of what happened to other folks.

Ebay is a great place.  Just not for ordanance.
