Pressure difference between 3 1/2" vs 3" mag
« on: March 03, 2009, 01:36:11 PM »
I have a chance to pick up a Stevens SxS in 12 Guage, it's chambered for 3".  It needs a lot of work but I enjoy projects.  It's missing some springs, needs reblued and the stock refinished but for $60 it's hard to pass on.  To the point, it's an old goose gun and I was thinking since I seldom get more than two shots off in the duck blind it might be nice to carry this lighter weight gun on long trecks instead of the big semi.  Could I have the chamber extended to take 3 1/2" shells safely?  If so this could be a fun project!

No. SAAMI pressure max is 11,500 PSI for 2 3/4" and 3" 12 Gauge chambers. For the 3 1/2" gun, it is 14,000 PSI. Most, maybe all, 3 1/2" loads will exceed 11,500 PSI.

I'd buy the gun anyway.

You don't need 3 1/2 inch shells.  The people who sell them do.
