Can anyone tell me what the "S" in front of the serial means?

The "S" serial number pre-fix identifies the gun as a "Post War" revolver.

If the gun is say in 98% condition, does the "S" add to value?

The S pre-fix began in 1946, and ran until 1970 on the N Frame guns.

The older gun is probably a bit more precious than a newer gun, though, that model 58 (S serial), being a .41 mag, began manufacture about 1964 right up to 1970. In 1969, the "N" prefix began to emerge on N frame guns.

FWIW: I've never heard about an S&W Model 58 hanging around too long in a show case.
They are somewhat compact for the available potency, and no adjustable sight to snag on a pocket or holster.

Total production for model 58 = 20,287 from 1964 to 1977.

Yeah, my dad came up with one from someone who apparently had it a long time. The cylinder shows absolutely no signs of firing. However the checkering on the grips shows that it has been handled a bit. I hope to get an approximate value.

According to Supica and Nahas in the Standard Catalog of S&W:

As New in Box=$800
Exceptional=$700
Very Good=$450
Good=$325
Fair=$265
Poor=$175

These figures merely represent guidelines of value.

Yes but, S&W also used the S prefix for the very first made in new offerings.
