looking for 45-70 load using re7 for a contender w/ 23" barrel. The only bullet I currently have on hand is rem 405 grn sp.
Re7 was the only powder I could find on the shelf in my area good for 45-70.  So now I need to load some rounds up. Just wondering if any one has loads safe for contender.

Do I need a filler w/ re7

No need for a filler with the following loads with RL#7 which by the way happend to be one of my favorite powders for that cartridge.

These loads are Trapdoor level at a max of 16,000 CUP
Min 35.0 gr approx 1300fps   Max 37.0 gr approx 1450 fps

These loads are 1886 Win and Marlin1895 level and should be no problem for your rifle max load generates 26,000 CUP

Min load 41.0 gr for Approx. 1600 fps
  Max load 46.0 gr  "     "        1800 fps

BTW If you have or can get powders like 2400, H-322, N-133 or 2015BR they are excellent alternatives to RL-7

For real low velocity and recoil SR 4759 is hard to beat

I have loaded as much as 50 gr RL-7 to push a 350 gr Hdy and 400 gr Speer bullet from a Handi and found recoil "memorable" ;) and decided that there was nothing where I lived on four legs that I needed to confront with that load!

BTW The Speer Manual shows hotter loads for their 400 gr FN with RL-7 starting with 41.0 gr to a max of 45.0 gr for Trapdoor level and 49.0 gr for Lever Actions. Their top bolt action load is 52.0 gr

thanks just what I wanted to know. I have a can of 2400 for hornet and 30carbine. The problem here in So. Or it is impossible to find powder or primers and some caliber bullets. I might be able to find H322.  I can't even find a brick of 22lr ammo last brick I saw was going for $35.00

Re 2400. I have only found one manual that shows that powder with the jacketed bullet.
The firearm used for this load is a Thompson Contender with a 16" barrel. I have used that load in a Handi and it burns very clean and is a pleasure to shoot.
The load below is with the Speer 400 gr. FN which IMO is so close to the Rem 405's that it should not be an issue.

 From a 16" barrel
22.0 gr for 1200 fps
27.0 gr for 1400 fps

Thx, I'm going to start w/ the re7 since I have 2lbs of it. And save the 2400 for hornet.

RL7 is one of my two favorite powders for loading the 45-70!!!  I too load up around 50grs for my heavy loads.
Just because of powder shortages/spotty avalibility I now use IMR4198 in its place. (I had about 5 1lb cans not being used, and use the RL7 for a couple different calibers)
Both are excellent powders for heavy 45-70 loads.
