Good morning dpe, Canon6, Montanan, MT_Sourdough, Southpaw, Forster, Atlaw, pab1, newstart2k, Skunk, kitchawan kid, lurker, CJ, Bilmac, thxmrgarand, Syncerus, Mcwoodduck, Brennemanj83, Old Shooter,TY22, burntmuch and Grimjim.

It's partially cloudy but bright and sunny with no wind and 36 degrees right now. Looking to be a nice day.

Got the second half of the garden spaded yesterday, as a result the knee is a bit swollen this morning, but that's to be expected.  There is another 60 foot bed that needs spading, but I am going to leave that alone for now. This bed was hidden behind a row of ornamental junipers that we took out.  The bed was heavily shaded by the junipers that had grown up 15 feet tall and 6 feet across. Now that the bed is exposed there is all sorts of stuff sprouting up.  We are going to let the bed go and see what comes up now that sun can reach it.

Got the lathe partially wired up yesterday.  Hooked it up enough to turn it on. First time it's been running in 4 years and it sounds good. I have to run over to the Hardware store and pick up a box to finish the hook up of the lathe.    Then it bolt it down and level it.  Getting this down is my Goal for the day.

The wife's not feeling too chipper.  When we got back from Kalispell last week, as we were unloading the back of the pickup, with the 1/2 ton of supplies she bought  at Costco and Walmart, she took a header off the tail gate.  Her neck has been hurting her ever since.  She finally made an appointment to see the Doc next week.  Can't have my chief cook and bottle washer of off on sick leave...she's also my best friend and favorite Gopher Hunting partner.

Well enough malingering at the keyboard...work to do.

Good morning all !

Lovely morning here also , no wind , not even a breeze , 52 degrees . Just racked the rocks off the side lawn where I had piles snow last winter , got a bit of grave in with the snow .... opps   >:(

Did the "Gopher  Safari "again yesterday afternoon . Friends grandsons invited me to shoot gophers with them and ,oh yah , bring some ammo .   ;D

We left about 2:30 and headed out south of Town into some pasture ground on edge of oil field .
41 gophers and one Jack Rabbit . the jack was taken with my cheapy Savage 17hmr @ 200 yards . The 13 year old got it with one shot .
Got back in to a multi-drawed area with a livestock pond in the bottom. Good shooting on all the steep hill sides leading in to the catchment pond. Ranges from 25 to 100 yards. About 5 PM the wind quit , dead calm , sun came out and targets could not pop up fast enough !   Great afternoon and early evening .

Congrats, Oldshooter!  Guess all them fireworks back in July started something. ::)   It was 72 when I pulled back in to town from breaking down deer camp, pretty darn nice.  Saw lots of antilope and coming back saw quite a few deer.  Mulely coats looked ruff, starting to loose winter hair, found lots of tuffs of hair on my place, as well as quite a bit of Elk sign.  Gonna have to try for permit for that area.  DP

Today, we took a ride to Dry Cottonwood.  Its part of my old backyard, the other side from Browns Gulch.  Dry Cottonwood is just east of Deer Lodge.  My girlfriend and I were hoping to get her son in on his first gopher kill.  As it turned out, we didnt get any chance for gophers, but the young man did get to make his first kill with his 22.  He hunted down a couple of squirels.    I normally dont shoot squirels, but I chalked it up as a survival training.  I told the young man that a person can always find squirels any time of the year.  High elevation or low, if you are in survival mode in the back country, squirels cooked over an open fire can keep a man from starving.  No, we didnt eat the squirels.   :P ::)
Those CCI segmented Hollow Point Hypervelocity (1640fps) rounds were quite explosive.  The squirels were not suitable for pics.  These are definately gonna be his gopher ammo of choice.
I also made him sit still as some mule deer approached us for close inspection (about 30 yards).  Not easy for a young man to sit still, but he'll learn.
We also saw lots of antelope and mule deer.  I was granted permission to hunt antelope up there, but there are not a lot of tags permitted for that area.  It is said that there are over 600 antelope in that area now, but only 5 antelope buck tags drawn last year.  There was 10 doe pronghorn permits drawn for that area as well.
We saw that elk herd by Rock Creek Lodge again and we saw the elk herd opposite Beck Hill Road just west of Deer Lodge.  We saw about 200 head of elk altogether.  In my opinion, I dont think mule deer numbers have been this strong in many years.  Large herds and many of them.  I am actually seeing more Mulies than Whitetails.
Everybody had fun, but still hoping to find a gopher patch close to Missoula.
Gotta git'me a bigger ice box
