First Handi
« on: March 03, 2009, 09:14:32 AM »
Just bought my first handi and first 45-70.  ;D Got it off Gunbroker, sans scope, for 300. Not much more than a factory new price and this one has some custom work done on it. Cant wait to pick it up, should be a good hog gun.

Yea, Ruger Single Actions and now I think Handi's. Already thinking about the next one, maybe a 223 ultra or maybe a 243 youth for the kids or maybe a 357 mag, damn too many choices.  :o

Thanks guy's. I was the only bidder, thought for sure someone was gonna out bid me at the last moment. Now I just need to decide if I want a peep sight, low power scope, or red dot. It will be a hog gun with shots from up close out to maybe 100 yards, what would you all suggest.

You should consider XS sights ghost ring sights.  I love mine on my 500 hog buster.  Go here to see pics.  They are some of the fastest sights I've ever used.  handi.http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,163529.msg1098737081.html#msg1098737081

Their website is also very helpfu.www.xssights.com

Finaly got out to shoot my new toy, 2 fulltime jobs don't leave much time to play. >:( Shoots great but kicks like a mule, need to work on that. The muzzle brake tames the recoil well but is some damd loud I did most my shooting without it. I am going to put a peep sight and MRR on it and go hunting.

The .45-70 is the best IMO.  Cool looking rifle.

Stick with the Remington 405 grain factory loads or the equivelent.  No recoil.

I had a 22"45/70 with a brake on it tried for a yr to get used to the BOOM!! finally sold it. Nice looking flute job. I think Corrreys was a slug gun. Make sure you wear protection. Ain't much louder than a 45/70 with a full load and a brake . Nice looking gun though. Kurt

Was useing 300gr at about 1880, you knew when you dropped the hammer. :o I don't know who did the work but it's pretty nice and the trigger is great. Oh yea the shipping weight was 6 pounds, with the box and all.

I'd like to have one cut to the shortest legal length and fluted like that.  Rifle style MagnaPorting would reduce the felt recoil without the excessive noise.  The 300 grainers always seem to recoil worse to me.

Not one of mine but I like it.  I did have a shorty 45/70 but it was not fluted or braked.

I like that straight stock. How well did it handle the recoil? Was thinking of something like that on mine.

Yeah...that.  Hate most brakes.  Shoulder bruises heal but hearing damage is permanent.
