Parkerizing

I've got an old Enfield that bubba had got ahold  of and I'm trying to make a working man's rifle out of it. I've put it in a synthetic stock already and I'm in the process of getting the rear sight re-welded so I can mount a scope.

The other thing I'm wanting to do is parkerize it. Sooooooo I was wondering if any of you guys had a decent lead or suggestion on where to pick up the parkerizing material. I've seen a couple sites and just want to make sure I'm not passing up a better deal.

Also I'm looking for a pan big enough to do the entire gun at once, sans stock of course. All I can find are way on the pricey side.

Any help would be appreciated.

Use the Manganese Phosphate from Midway, $28.00 for a gallon which will make 5 gallons of solution which will do about 50 guns.  Just use WD 40 after you rince it in water and you are all set.  I use 3 inch PVC pipe with a water heater element in the bottom, you can make it as tall as you like and it will probably cost you about $30.00 to make.  Larry

Any problem with the element and the pvc? Did you heat shield or is it not a problem?

The pipe is ABS really, no problem at all.  I painted the element with high temp black BBQ paint, just don't run it without water in it.  Don't use the rubber washer included with the element, and a 1 1/4 (I think) conduit nut fits the element thread, so I used it on the inside of the plastic cap and sealed it all with silicon seal.  Mine has been in operation for well over a year now without any problems.  I have mine set up sitting in a plastic bucket just incase it leaks, but so far no problems at all.  I have a thermostat in mine, that is what the bolt does, conduct the heat to the thermostat, but it is just as easy to watch the temp and un plug it when it hits 180 or so.  It only takes about 10 minutes to do the rifle.  Larry

Well I think I will give it a try. It's definately simple enough. If you don't mind which parkerizing material do you use with this setup.

I put my barrels in when it hits 150 degrees F, pull the plug when it hits 180 degrees and it is done in less than 15 minutes.  Larry

They look great, have you done any receivers?

Problem with doing receivers is you need a FFL to keep them overnight, I only do this as a hobby, so it is not really practical for me to do a receiver.  Larry

Well my plans are to pick up the hardware side of this projest tonight and start asembling it. Ordered my material off Midway last night so they should arrive either tomorrow or Monday maybe. This should give me plenty of time to get it all together and ready. I'll do a good cleaning and stripping of the metal then chunk it off in the vat. I'll try to post picks of my old clunker after I'm done.

You will discover it parkerizes right over blueing or at least thin blueing.  Larry
