Youth scope for deer & target
« on: April 22, 2009, 07:50:16 AM »
Any thoughts on what scope would be best for a youth for hunting deer?
My boys are getting close to shooting age and next year they can pull the trigger.
When we go I will be with them and it would be a resting shot only.
But we can start at the range this year.....

They will be using my 223 NEF Handi w/youth stock and I plan to purchase a bipod.

Muller Red Dot, Reflex QuickShot?
3X scope?
Got:
Handi VP 22/410, 410, 20, 17M2, .223, 357MAX, 50cal ML SS w/MU plug

IMO a 2-7 or a 3-9 varible would be the way to go. They are extremely flexible, good as close as 10yds to more than 400 yards. Just don't get the huge 50mm objectives, stick with something in the 32 to 40mm range.  Dave

Thanks for the replys.....
Is eye relief more important with "young" shooters?
Or will the youth stock take care of any issues with looking through the scope?

As long as the stock is a close fit, eye relief isn't real critical on a 223. When you purchase the scope you want set it up on the rifle for the child. What I mean is----while they have the rifle in the shooting position and their cheek on the stock where it should be, have the scope in the rings(finger tight only) and slide it till they have a proper sight picture. Don't get me wrong, eye relief is important but its much more critical on the "hard kickers".  Dave

Should I buy an Accu-riser or Cheek Pad or a different stock for the Handi?

I set up a 243 youth Handi for my kids with a 3-9 varible and they didn't need a cheek pad or anything. I took them shoot'n enough to get familiar with the gun and when deer season rolled around it was deer in the freezer.    Dave
