Hogs invaded my county
« on: April 02, 2009, 06:07:41 PM »
Never had them before and now we do. They're destructive and I'll be forced to control them. How far is a typical shot? What's the best firearm for the job.

Depending on your area. Your shots could be point blank to a couple hundred yards out. My personal preferance for a hog round is one of the three following: .270, .308, or 7mm mag. However I have shot an killed hogs with a 223, 243, 3030, and several other rifles. I know alot on here will tell you to use a big bore. That is a personal preferance. Just like my preferance is mine. With that said though ANY rifle in any caliber you choose should work as long as you can place your shots acurrately. A shot just behind or in the ear will drop them in there tracks any time. Also you would want a good well made bullet. Again my preferance is REM CORLOKT. Never have had a problem with them yet.

Hogs are not as tough as deer, well let me rephrase that, most aren't. I just remembered the hogzilla the little boy shot. Any deer rifle will work fine. I like a 44 lever gun in the woods. I have used a 223, 35 rem and 308. All laid them down without them squealing on me.

Their eyesight isn't great. I've walked up to within 10 yards of them with a bow in thick cover. I've also shot them in bean fields out to 420 yards. So it's kind of like hunting deer. Just a tip, the smaller ones taste better. I like to take the ones under 2 1/2 foot tall at the back. The older ones are a little gamier. The ones here taste better in the fall when they are feeding on acorns. They of coarse will eat anything so be careful in warm season. They may have been munching on a rancid carcuss just minutes before you shot them.

Depends on the type of cover you are hunting in.  If it's thick jungle (I live in Hawaii) then your shots will generall be under 25yds.  I use a Ruger 45 colt w/250 hard cast bullets.  If you are hunting in open areas then your shots will be dictated upon how far you can spot them at.  Generally any decent rifle that shoots a bullet of at least 150gr should be fine.  I have shot hogs with a .223 but if you don't hit them in the head (bugeye effect) they are a little light.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

[1] Hogs are not as tough as deer, well let me rephrase that, most aren't.

[2] Their eyesight isn't great. I've walked up to within 10 yards of them...

[3] So it's kind of like hunting deer.

[4] Just a tip, the smaller ones taste better.

Sir,

I beg to differ with your [1] and [3].

[1] IMO most hogs are TOUGHER than deer; more muscular pound for pound in comparison; low to the ground; quick, fast, and extremely strong; 50 times more aggressive; and will take a lickin' and give back about as good as they get.  Have you ever been charged by a deer that was not killed by the first shot?  Hogs will sometimes head in the direction of the report and some have done considerable damage when they reach the shooter. Granted, shoot them in the right place and they go down just fine as do deer.  Perhaps that has been your experience and I applaud you in that case.

[2]  You've hunted hogs.  The can't see very well, they're nearsighted, but their senses of smell and hearing make up (and then some) for whatever they lack in eyesight.

[3]  In a lot of ways hunting hogs is EASIER than hunting deer.  They make so much noise rooting for worms and acorns, loudly fighting among themselves, and blundering around in the forest that after hearing them you can stalk them on the ground until you see them and then get really really close (as in [2])...something no self respecting deer will ever let you do.  You don't have to be super quiet, hyper-clean, or even wearing the latest scent-killing-leaf-like-store bought camo.  They leave a trail of destruction that anyone can plainly see.  They use the same trails over and over and over until their scent permeates the forest.  All other critters give way to hogs.

[4]  The smaller ones are quite good to eat...they don't get much smaller than suckling pig, which is a delicacy in many restaurants, but properly prepared or made into spiced sausage, the larger ones that are shot dead right there (DRT) without all that adrenalin in their muscles from being chased or only wounded (not unlike deer) are also quite good.  The quality of food in their range is a determinant in the taste of the meat.

Where are you hunting hogs?

{A} They're destructive

{B} I'll be forced to control them.

{C} How far is a typical shot?

{D} What's the best firearm for the job.

{A}  You got that right...and then some.  There are places where I am afraid to take my tractor over concern for its axles and tires.  My PU truck does not like the soft earth left in ther passings either.

{B}  Don't kid yourself.  If you have one, you probably have 50.  Once they become established in an area, and it does not take them long to take control, with two to three litters of from 7 to 11 piglets per sow per litter; there is no getting rid of them - EVER!

{C}  As Arier stated...sometimes 10 yards or less...sometimes 500 yards or more, if your hunting area will tolerate that range and you can hold on the game for a shot that long.  My typical shots are from 220 yards down to 25 yards.

{D}  GB discourages me from this, but I have killed a lot of hogs with a Ruger Model K77/22RP (22 LR) from a steady rest, 14-foot elevated position, unobstructed path, 25 yards or less, optimum conditions, in the ear or the "X" between the ears and the eyes (where the brain is just below the skull), DRT.  I do not advocate this caliber for others, but I use it to my advantage from a rifle that spits out the cheapest ammunition into the tightest grouped holes at 50 yards that I have ever had the pleasure of shooting.   As S_J_KENNELS pointed out in his post (caliber-wise), I also use a Marlin Model 336 in 30-30 caliber, a Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight in 270 caliber, and a Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk in 45 LC caliber.

Bullets of choice are Speer 150 grain Flat Nose for the 30-30 tubular magazine ; 150 grain Nosler Partition for 270; 230 grain hard cast semi-wad cutter lead for the 45 LC; and 36 grain hollow points for the 22 LR.

I have reloaded and shot the 150 grain Speer Grand Slam and Nosler 130 and 150 grain Ballistic Tip in 270; 170 grain Winchester Factory loads and 130 grain Speer FN's in 30-30; but I have found the others to shoot straighter, pound harder, disrupt less meat, and cause more DRT hunts, which IMO makes for better tasting game.

The CCI Mini Mag solid works great if you pick your shots and put it behind the ear. That's all we can use with the exception of deer season. If ya hit um too far back ya might have to shoot um a few more times.

i have kill some small one with a 380auto pocket gun with FMJ/JHP mix mag load. But the best gun to me is any med bore that you can find or a 12ga.  If i had to pick one i would use a 30/06,8mm,7.62x54,7.62x39,303 or 308win. for me the cost of the gun and ammo is a point and i could find guns in those cal. for 300$ or less.

Its over kill but I am using a NEF 12 ga Ultra-Slug...it is quiet the pole ax on them.  I have shot several at under 30 yards with a compound bow as well and that makes for a pretty exciting hunt.

I use a 41mag with 215gr hardcast swc, 35 rem and a 22 mag. the 22 mag with the gamepoints work great behind the ear. For eating, we try to stay under 90 LBS. The biggest one I killed was 250+ and she stunk so bad I left her where she was except for the tail-Ft Benning was paying a bounty on them and you had to turn in the tail but that has now stopped.

I have been hunting hogs on my brothers ranch in west Texas for over 5 years (dropped 15-20 hogs) and have been using my Savage 22-250.  I reload and shot a Barnes 53gr TSX and have taken hogs up to 350#, all shoulder shot, none going more than 20 yards.  I push it along with 35grs of Varget.  In March sent two 200# boars to the happy hunting ground.

JeffG, be careful what you wish for.  They invaded my place about six years ago.  In addition to the destruction of fences and land they have run the deer off.  The fun of shooting them is not worth the damage they do, and truthfully, they don't really eat that well.

They are real good ground up as sausage with the addition of Cajun spices.  You will forget about bacon soon too!  Breakfast ham on the other hand is still a favorite.

I have better luck with a trap, then you can use the 22LR. and they taste great if you leave them
in the pen and feed them about 3 or 4 weeks.

Hogs like this?

I like the 30-06 the H&K SLB2000 carries 5 rounds in a magazine

12ga /30-06 combo .

For really big hogs

the 9.3x74r works great.  Here is a picture showing both the 30-06 and 9.3x74r

When I lived in south Florida back in the early '70s, some guys I knew would use dogs and duct tape.  They would let their dogs grap hold and litterally weight the hog down, then the biggest cracker of 'em all would wade in, grap the back legs, and hold it off the ground while another wrapped it up in duct tape.  Later they threw them in the boat to take to a pen for a few weeks of confined feeding, then butcher them for wonderful grillin'!  I felt a little silly standing around with my .44 mag, while they were armed with duct tape. ::)

Thanks for that thought Arch...I am still LMAO.  What a point of reference.  Make it stop.

Been there done that.  Even the small hogs will beat you practically to death with the strength they have.  I remarked to my Trapping Partner, as we were extracting five for duct tape and relocation, that there has GOT to be a better way.  A REAL farmer would not put up with getting the crap kicked out of him like we did.  City boys trying to have Rural fun.  Would have made a good "America's Funniest" $100K video though.

One more Cracker-hog story from back in the early '70s.  I used to call on a guy over in the swamp country southeast of Immokalee.  When I first met him, I didn't know whether or not to get out of my car.  He had probably a dozen pit bull and cur crosses running around his shack.  I waited a few minutes before I heard something that almost sounded human, "GARWshutupthat@#%&!!racketNOW!!"  Sort of all in one word, but definitely not Jeff Foxworthy style.  Every dog hunkered down with their tail, or what was left of it, tucked between their legs.  Assuming it was now safe, I left my vehicle to meet truly a very interesting swamp runner.  While getting introduced I commented about what a good looking pack of dogs he had.  "Yup, em ers ma hawg dawgs," he told me.  Actually they were awful-looking with torn ears, scars, and faces on a mother, or a swamp runner, could love.  After a few trips to stop by, I finally knew him well enough to ask about the scars on his arms.  It looked like he'd been working under a lawn mower without shutting it off.  He told me, "Me and em er dawgs like a-runnin' hawgs in the swamp.  Oncet they grab a-holt of em, I wade right in amongst em with ma huntin' knife to cut his throat.  An' sometimes ah miss in tha melee."  He was one tough swamper.  But he did get his 'hawgs'.  Since those days, I've killed some with my bow, but not with dogs, hunting knives, or duct tape!   ;D

Hey good luck, Land_Owner.

they are coming into my home state..but the farmers won't like them...say nothing about many other land owners. Some got loose from a Penna game farm and crossed into NY state (they don't respect borders any more than other illegals do).
Now a local game farm has brought some in..about 2 miles from my house, I expect within 3-4 years we may be knee-deep in wild hogs...because I can't forsee those hogs respecting his fences either..

BTW: That game farm is about 2 miles from my hunting land also...

I like my Savages (reasonably priced and better than decent accuracy) in 30-06 (165gr core-lokt) or 7mm-08 (150gr core-lokt). I have also taken a few with my Mini-30 and a 30-30 works well also.
