Second shot on trap doubles ?
« on: May 11, 2009, 06:54:37 AM »
My family is shooting trap at the local range.  Strictly amateurs enjoying the day.

On doubles, my youngest son is doing something I hadn't thought of.

If he misses the first target, he fires his second round at the missed first target instead of going for the second target.

First, is this legal and correct procedure ?

Second, is this faster than going for the second target ?

He says the trap scorer counted his second shot when successful on the first target as hits.

No doubt for informal fun shooting you'd count it but I don't think so for registered shooting. I think you'd lose both that way. Is it faster/easier that way? Yeah I think so but teaches bad habits if you are gonna shoot competition doubles at some future date.

We used to shoot a game named by it's inventor as "cow pasture skeet". It was basically a doubles thrower placed where station four on a skeet range it. The targets went just barely inside of stations one and seven. You starte to one side of thrower and moved down the side to each of the positions that would correspond to the skeet stations then from seven back to four and down to one and then either started over or began backing up straight away from station one.

The idea was to break both targets each time and you had a "back up man" to cover you if/when you missed. In it the rules were front gunner MUST fire two times at TWO targets before the back up man could fire. Now if you missed both he could chose which to shoot but he must wait on the front gunner to fire twice and it better be clear to all there that you shot at both not at the same target twice.

It was fun but the idea of it was a strictly money game. We all put up a buck and the winning team took all the money, then we put up a buck each again and did it again and we continued until we ran out of targets or folks ran out of money or ammo.

What he does is what they try to teach folks for sporting clays as well.  Since you are already on that bird, maybe just a little behind or whatever, you usually, (not always), have a better chance for a score by sticking with the first bird.

Yup for sporting clays singles ONLY that is allowed. If you do it on doubles at sporting clays tho both are lost in competition. I am sure you'll find it is the same at trap doubles tho I have never shot registered trap doubles.
