Bornsouthern34, really nice looking mortar. If and when possible, it's most helpful for us to realize the size of the mortars/cannons if a powder can might be included in the pictures. Hey, that's only a suggestion - and now let's see a picture of smoke and fire when you have an opportunity to fire it. :)

That's a neat looking mortar.  :) What does it shoot? Golfballz? You'll get many years of pleasure out of that.

That's a nice model of a coehorn mortar, Bornsouthern34, but be forewarned; now that you've taken this first step it may only be a matter of time before you'll be classified (along with the rest of us) as being a bona fide participant in a modern day arms race involved in the collecting of historic (looking) artillery.

Thanks for all the kudos. It shoots (or should I say "BLASTS") golfballs. However, I cannot take credit for the barrel. I traded for it. As for being hooked, I am working on my bowling ball mortar now and then I will move on to a .50 cal scale deck cannon.

This is the link to the video.

Was that load BP or TNT? ;D

Might want to step back a bit more if that's the septic tank cover next to the mortar there; the recoil might collapse the tank!

It was Pyrodex but it did have a very lightweight patch. Seemed like too much gas was going around the ball on some of my previous attempts. I do promise that it was only about 250 grains of powder though. LOL

Very nice mortar!

You need definitely to get your hands on some real black powder. GOEX can be purchased online and shipped to your door, in as little as five pound lots from PowderInc. That's not an insignificant up-front investment, about a hundred bucks. But it goes fast, and as ammunition prices go these days, it's really a bargain. If you can put together a larger order, the price per pound drops considerably since the HAZMAT is a flat fee up to 25 pounds.

And it's well worth it, trust me.

Pyrodex, as you've found, needs a good seal in the bore and therein lies potential safety issues. And it's nasty stuff, real BP is as natural as the ingredients (charcoal, sulphur, saltpeter) and cleans up easier than any of the subs. Pyrodex and other BP subs are great for hunting and target shooting with modern inline muzzleloaders. For muzzleloading artillery, not so much.

A fine mortar such as yours deserves nothing less than the real thing!

Once you've gone black you'll never go back...

We shoot nothing but BP in our smokepoles but the old man had an old can of Pyro in the cabinet so we decided to shoot it up instead. Unfortunately, I ran out of golfballs before I could test with the BP. I suppose it is time to stop back by the driving range.

Actually, when I think about it, I would much rather take out my frustrations on a golfball this way rather than trying to just hit it with a bent club.  ;D

Sorry if I sounded preachy on the BP. Of course if you've used it you'll understand.

With the BP you won't need to patch the ball to get a good push. In fact it's accepted safety practice to have some clearance ("windage" in the terminology of the day) between the ball and the bore. This allows for variations in the projectile and the accumulation of fouling.

In the originals it also served another purpose. The blowby would fill the barrel with fire and it was this fireball that that lit the forward-pointing fuse on the shell.

BTW: Here is my GB mortar, the middle piece in this photo...

That's not all of it, just the bigger stuff. I also have a couple of handgonnes, a .69 caliber micro-mortar, a  5/8" bore scare gun (retired), some cap and firecracker firing toy cannons, a couple of small non-firing display guns, and a few other assorted items.

And I'm currently working on a 1" bore thundermug.

And this will be you soon.

You will be assimilated, resistance is futile.  ;D

I hope you are kidding, I would hate to think that someting I said as a joke would motivate anyone away from such a rewarding hobby.  :-[

No humor fail, I love a good joke. Heaven forbid, I can't give up shooting now, the "BOOM" is in my blood. Has been since I was about 12. Now I just have a legal way (no more pipe bombs) to do it.
