Plasma vs. LCD

Looks like our old tv is getting ready to go. Wife bought it 11 years ago or so. Big screen Toshiba. It's actually held up pretty good. But, now am looking to buy either a plasma or LCD. From what I've read and reasearched, looks like the plasma gives a better picture in the over 50'' size . Just wondering if anybody could give me some feedback on their experience with one. gypsyman

I don't have either, I have a projection HD Tv from Mitsubishi.  But when I was researching for the new TV buy, I did discover that if you have issues with glare then the LCD or the Projection are better.  The Plasma has a glass screen and the glare could possibly give you fits in a room with lots or big windows.  Hope this helps alittle.

I own one of each.I have a Sanyo 26" LCD flat screen in the master bedroom and a 51" flat plasma Panasonic in the living room.Both are good tv's.Plasma's have a "warm" color picture while the lcd has a so-called sharp pic.A plasma will show glare for a lamp,window are such.Where I have the plasma I have heavy drapes making the room very dark.The lcd on the other hand does not show glare.Both have a very good pic,so it's really just a personal choice.If I were you I would go to a showroom where I could see both types side-by-side.Imho if I were to chose between the two at this point,I would take the lcd........Rick

We use both where I work and I personally would get a lcd. The plasmas burn in way too easy. If you have kids that play video games it won't take long for the image to burn in to the screen.

Plasma's have a pretty good "rate", that is they change the screen fast.  Good for sports.  Great deep blacks - great for music.  This is a case of what may be a better product getting driven out by an inferior product.  Many company's are dropping production of plasma for lcd only.  Pioneer is out of that business.  Plasma is generally regarded as a better medium for large format like you said.  If you want one, buy it while you can.  I think the plasma screens will be gone in two years max.

I asked that same question the other day, and someone told me that lcd was cheaper than plasma but would not last as long. Anyone know anything about that?

After much research I bought two lcd tv's, a 42 and 32". Do yourself a favor and buy a Blue Ray dvd player to match a 1080 tv and you will be amazed.

at least 50,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio
3 HDMI inputs
4 ms response time

The 52" Samsung LN52A650 is pretty amazing and can be found around $2000.

Of course you will then have to get HDTV programming and BluRay.
