It's 36 degrees and windy under clear blue skies...to windy for gophers this morning.  South paw lives about 40 miles north east of me, in the banana belt.

Ah well even in paradise we will have a bad day.   Plenty of chores to do around here.  I was up at Southpaws yesterday and we cut some wood for project...all the wood says some assembley required...so I can drill some holes, I suppose

Good Morning Montana!

Looking good here in NE Wisconsin. Temps in the 60s and just a little breeze from the North.

Good luck hunting to Southpaw and Jack. Don't get Jack too tired out. Remember what happened on the last mouse hunt - Jack slept for days after that one. ;)

Double D, skip those chores (why do today what you can put off until tomorrow ;) ), go North young man and hunt gophers with Southpaw and Jack. Heck, pick up the Montanan along the way and make a day of it.

Hope you folks have a grand day in Montana.

Mike

Good Morning Montana,

Well we are suffering down here in 70 degree cloudy skies. Rained yesterday so its a swamp outside, will probably go to Gander Mountain and see what I cant afford.

Shoot a PD for me fellas!

OHHHH, THE HUMILITY!  What a sad condition for a man to be reduced to.  A one time mighty gopher slayer now standing on one side of the fence while mobs of them STANDING on the other side.  Looking right at me chirping, those greasey, slimy vermin mock and taunt me.
Anyways, I am loading the crew up to go and shoot the new to the crew 30-30.
My girlfriend is trying to light a spark under my butt.  I guess I need to start loading up.

Everbody  ;) Have a Wonderful Montana Spring Day! ;D

And she is a beauty here in Billings except for the wind.  Computer said 64, but to many thermometers are reading in the 70 range to believe this thing.  Second youngest son's birthday today, he's 15.  Have a house full of people so I needed to get some quiet space in.  Have a good day everyone.  DP

Good evenning fine folks. ;D The crew went and fired the thurty thurty. Most had a difficult time with open sights.  They all experienced the difference between a firm hold and a loose hold. Firm = very minimal felt recoil   Loose = ouch!   :D  I fired it once for a three round group of 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards.  I say, just might be the nicest trigger I have ever used.  Very light and crisp.  Caught my girlfriend and her boys off guard by how light and quick the trigger is.  I do not know if it has been worked or if it is this nice in stock form.
The oldest boy set out with the 22 to try to make his first score with a rifle.  First, we tried to get a gopher and we had our first chance at some fair and legal gophers, but they quickly retreated down their holes to never come back up again. :-\
So, we took on up the hill and watched some whitetails for a while and then he went on a squirel hunt.  Its surprises me how much these kids can learn while hunting squirels.  I sit back for the most part and let them try to figure it out and give pointers once in a while.  After about 1 hour of chasing a squirel through some gnarley brush and undergrowth he finally got his shot.  He was using the target round, so his trophy pick is suitable for public viewing.  In the picture, I just happened to be pointing out some nice scratches that he ended up putting on his brother's 22.

Patina indeed.

Here is a pic of him getting ready to find out a 30-30 can kick if not held firmly.

Soon after I posted a black cloud rolled in from the north , temperatures dropped , so went to work  :(
Grandson and Daughter are up for the week end . He wanted to shoot a few gophers but it was just plain nasty .
By later afternoon the winds let up , it warmed up so we went to my range and plinked a few 100 rounds@ the Iron Gopher 6 Pack.
The Grandsons girl friend came down from Canada  so it was her first time shooting . We set up with the Browning T -Bolt 22 . It has peep sights so it took a bit of practice to both of them on the mark. Each got to try a clip of 25 through the Ruger Charger with the red dot scope. . They thought that was too much fun.
It had warmed up and wind had slowed down so we headed out to see if we could find some real gophers .   Got up to a good spot but wind picked up a bit . Gophers were real elusive . Grandson got off 2 shots , both missed .
Phone call to get home .... Son in law was by to have a look see @ fields he is farming this year. so end of Gopher hunt .... No pictures , no gophers , Jack had to stay home  :'(
Perhaps to day  ;D

I am going to open my mouth here and stick my nose in when it hasn't been ask to go.

Mt_Sourdough.

The shooting set up is all wrong  for those kids. Shooting the gun like they are in the picture is going to hurt...I wouldn't shoot it.

Right now what you need to do is build their confidence, develop their shooting skills and make them believe the gun isn't going to hurt when they pull the trigger.

Set your targets up at 10 or 15 yards, no further.  Have them fire standing.  Have them focus on proper shooting stance, trigger control and sight alignement shooting the lightest bullet weight you can get for the rifle..  If they shoot standing their body will be erect and not hunched over the gun.  When the gun is fired there upper body wil rock back and the felt recoil will be reduced.   Shooting close they will appear to shoot better than if they were shooting further away.   Shooting like this way will build confidence and reduce their fear of getting bit from recoil.
