Ruger #1: 475 Linebaugh **ballistics added**
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:00:11 AM »
I see that Ruger is producing their medium sporter in the 480 Linebaugh.  Ive been looking for that caliber in a rifle...was hoping for a lever action but the #1 might just be the ticket.  I currently pack a Freedom Arms Model 83 in that caliber and really like the performance it gives out of a pistol length bbl.

The .475 Linebaugh should be a fine round in a short 'n handy #1 in my way of thinking.  I may even stay with the open sights to keep it light and easy to carry.

What do you folks think?  Is there gonna be a line at the door when this gun becomes available or is it gonna be like the #1 in .357 mag I saw a month or so ago???  (Sorry Handi guys...couldn't resist).

I saw they were making it as well.  Looks interesting, but not sure I have a spot for it in my safe.  I do love the #1's.  Any idea what kind of performance that round has out of a rifle?  I might come closer to getting the .357 mag but really not needing that caliber either at least in a rifle.

I did some poking around on the internet and found an article by Mike Rocole, who did some tests with Ruger #1's in 45/70 and .475 Linebaugh.  Ive got a link to the entire article below, and copied his summary table that does provide ballistics from a rifle barrel.

I think Im in your court on this one.  I might have to squeeze my wallet til I can get one of the new Ruger #1's in .475.  Should be a marvelous woods gun for anything from whitetails, bear, elk, moose etc.
