New Rossi 223 owner
« on: April 29, 2009, 05:48:24 PM »
Hello all, I'm new here. I just picked up a Rossi single shot 223 for $179. (thin barrel) So far I'm pretty happy with it. After scrubbing the barrel with some bore paste and about 20 rounds, cleaning every third shot, I took it to the range to sight it in. At 50 yards I put 3 shots in about a half inch. At the 100 yard range my first group was around 4 inches! After adjusting the gun on my rather unsteady rest I got my group down to about 1 1/4" @ 100 yards. Is this typical grouping for these guns? I've only got about 40 rounds through it so far, am I expecting too much? This is my first Rossi AND my first .223, so I don't know what to expect from it accuracy wise. I'm wanting to hunt some groundhogs at about 250 -300 yards out.

Awfully quiet bunch here. Ah hell, I missed a woodchuck by just a couple inches at 250 yards in a breeze today, so I'm satisfied anyway.

There aren't too many Rossi shooters on here, not like the NEF guys.  I too have a Rossi 223 only it is a HB.  I've had it for a couple of years.  It seems to be a good shooter, it'll head shoot a chuck at 200 yards.  It really likes the Winchester white box ammo with a 45 grain HP (when you can find them).  I've done some hand loading with 50 grain ballistic tips and Varget and BL-C2.  They both do well but it likes the BL-C2 best.
Thanks,
Trapper Jack

Cool. Thanks for the feedback. The Winchester white box was what I was shootin. I picked up some Remington UMC 45 grain JHPs I'm gonna try also. I'd have an NEF if I found one I could afford, I just got lucky and found this Rossi first. I'm impressed so far. Nice lil gun. Hell, I even decorated the stock some with brass tacks and button head furniture nails. I'm likin it.
