Dave: I teach 4-H shooting program to kids 10 to 17.  We use .22RF in the indoor range.  The first half of the class we teach the NRA gun safety, and shooting course.  The second half we teach State Hunter Safety.  At the end we like to take the kids out to the local shooting range and let them shoot a rifle that they can actually do some hunting with.  We have almost everything from .223s to 45-70s.

Really want to impress a loud mouth Dad, give his daughter my .17 HMR and set her up to shoot 100 and 200 yards.  Seven shot groups at each range.  I'll teach her how to dial the scope, and oversee her doing it.  Let her take her shots and usually she will turn in an impressive group.   Then challenge her Dad to match that with his hunting rifle.  80% of the time they are not even close.  Never underestimate a girl or woman, when it comes to shooting.  I learned that lesson the hard way.

There is nothing better than teaching a kid how to shoot.  3 yrs. ago I married a woman with an 11yr old daughter.  I have 2 sons of my own aqnd have taught them to shoot.  Brooke didn't understand hunting and that is fine.  When I got her own pellet gun and she started to shoot she has fun just shooting cans and gets exicted hitting them at 50yrds without too much trouble.  Kids are our future the more we can get involved the better.  They don't have to go up to be hunters,  but they probably won't grow up to be an anti either.

Try getting her involved with Skeet or Trap.  She might like that.

My inlaws hate me, they are antis.  They do not want guns in their houses.  While babysitting for their kids many years ago I took the kids to the skeet range.  I had the kids sit inside the club house, while I shot and Sky worked the controls.  When they saw Sky controlling the birds they were envious.  Soon the oldest Kerry got me to take her skeet shooting (with her Dad's permission).  Kerry turned into a lover of skeet.  Kerry has introduced the other kids to skeet.  Now the kids are grown, Some are married, some still living at home.  Five of the seven shoot skeet regularly, and one boy (Michael) has multiple shotguns.   Michael's parents are the most adamant anti gunners in the group.  Michael's Mom hates guns, she does not like it that Michael has a vault in the garage, with all his shotguns there.  She blames me for his passion, I love it.  I love it, I'm an antagonistic old coot.

Michael is 22 now and has found Sporting Clays.  That means more shotguns.  I've invited him up here to go hunt Moose, he has not said whether he is coming or not.  His mother is a big PETA supporter.

The 17 HMR and 17 Mach2 are cartridges that perform beyond expectations the ballistic charts present. I have limited my use to smaller game and have not used on coyotes or bobcats. I continue to be impressed by the flat arc and reach of the cartridge - last year on a mild windy day a friend and I set up on a large potgut village on a hillside at a ranged 225 - 265 yards and used a box of ammo each with about a 35% hit ratio. At first we made the mistake of too much holdover. There was no red mist but when hit the potguts were DRT. Fun stuff trying to out guess the effect of the wind.

Danza;
   I'm with Tim on that one..send the NEF back..My .17 HMR (NEF) shoots very well. Split cases points toward an out-of-spec chamber,
make them get it right.

I have shot the 17HMR in 4 different brands of rifles in varing factory ammo. NEF, Savage, Ruger, Marlin, ... they ALL shot very well. It's a nice little round and has a good crack too it. I have shot many a game with it and it will kill well- given it's limitations.
I have killed many groundhogs with it.... but have seen many get away at longer distances. Also Between the V-Maxs and Speer HP's, the V-Max was more explosive as the Speer always made a clean cut. We killed one that one shooter had shot 2rds of Speer and the other had shot 1rd V-Max and clearly up close you could see the V-Max was the more explosive in the 17HMR as the Speer cut straight lines in the hide.
