H&R ULSH Project (12 gauge)
« on: March 05, 2009, 10:42:55 PM »
So I couldn't find a review or range report on the ULSH 12 gauge anywhere on the internet.  I got one a few weeks ago for a really good price and was light as hell.  I should have most of the stuff I want to do to it done by next week and be able to post a range report.  Current:

12 gauge ULSH.
8" pipe filled with 7 1/2 shot and metal cap on one end in the stock.

Slip on small Limb Saver.
Uncle Mike's Buttstock Shotshell Ammunition Carrier with slugs in it for added weight.
Warne High Maxima 1" rings.
Zeiss Conquest 3x9 40 Scope.

The Gun alone weighs 5 1/2 lbs.  With everything added I'm expecting it to be about 9 lbs.

I'm going to see how Lightfields group first.  I'm kinda a new hunter so my ultimate goal with the gun is to bag a deer in Ohio in November.

that's great buddy and please keep us all posted on the new gun. I have not seen many reports on how well the new ones shoot. I have an older light 12 gauge barrel with a scope rail attached and it shoots great. Best of luck at the range and during deer season. I will be watching for your report(s)....<><....:)

I too was curious about the ultra lights.  They are supposed to have different rifling than the other barrels.  Makes me wonder how they will shoot.  I also find it funny you bought the ultralight then added 3 pounds of weight to it.  I bet at 5.5lbs it would pack a punch on both ends.

Yeah, I got the ULSA because it was about 70 bucks cheaper than the USH.  I've got it all set up and it looks nice (I'll post pics when I get home in the morning).

I just need to get out to shoot it so I can post a range report.

So I got it out to the range yesterday just to see how shooting it would feel.  It was an inside range with max range of 35 yards.  I shot 15 cheap sabot slugs through it just to get a feel for the recoil.  I was mostly trying to get the scope zeroed at 35 yards so no real groups.  I bought some light recoil lightfields so next time I get out I'll group it at 100 yards with lightfields and see how it goes.

Recoil was very managable.  More of a light shove than anything else.

No pics this time.  Sorry

That's a first for me I have never heard anybody call it (recoil from a H&R slug gun) "More of a light shove than anything else" but then I sold the USH and all it's weight for the ULSH maybe I need to add that 5#'s back to it  ;D Kurt

Hows the accuracy on your ULSH compared to your experience with your USH?  You've got the 20 gauge one right?  I'm curious as I'm thinking of getting a slug gun for my fiance.

Kicks like a mule and kills deer dead. I reload my own so I have not really gotten any thing to work well yet but it shoots the buckhammers just like the USH did . I still think H&R makes the best shotgun slug shooter out there hands down.Kurt

I also have the ULSH in 12ga and it shoots the 2 3/4 buckhammers very well.I've killed three dear so far at various ranges with the longest being about 70 yards.None of them took another step!I will never go back to my rifle after using this gun.To me the recoil is no big deal with a limb saver recoil pad.Best deer gun period!

Especially when you consider the price...I love the fact that those guys added a Zeiss scope as well...I wish I could afford to put Zeiss or a similar brand on all of my scoped guns.

Its a 500+ dollar scope NIB from most places.  I found someone selling one LNIB for 260.  Just got a great deal.  Still costs more than the gun though.

Still need to get it out to 100 yards.  I'll probably try lightfields and buckhammers next time.

FWIW, Zeiss is offering their 1.8-5x38 conquest riflescopes for $299.00  right now. That's
a pretty good deal on very good quality optics and it should be a great scope for a slug gun.  I've owned a 3-9x40 conquest since they came out and I've been totally satisfied with it.

Zeiss makes good equipment.  I have used Zeiss survey instruments and they are a joy to use.

I have used the Remington BuckHammers for the past 3 seasons and have dropped deer all 3 years out to 100 yards plus.  One year I replaced the turkey choke tube in my 12ga NEF with a Carlson Rifled choke tube and the other two years I used my 20ga USH.  I see no reason for me to try anything else.
