Ball Starter/ Short starter?
« on: April 14, 2009, 03:58:56 AM »
Does anybody use these with an Inline Muzzleloader? I dont, but i'm sure a few do. I used to use one all the time with a FlintLock with patch and round ball. But not with an inline.

Not in a inline, but I do when I shoot round balls out of the .54 sidelock. Back in the 80's when I bought my first inline, the Knight MK-85, I used one at first until I realized I didn't need it. One less thing to mess with. ;)

An inline or side lock, what is the difference?  A muzzle stuffer is a muzzle stuffer!  I use one for both.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

Not much difference as far as the rifle or barrel is concerned, it is what you put in the barrel that is usually different. I use slip-fit conicals or saboted bullets in my inlines, they can usually be started in the bore with thumb pressure and then seated with just a ramrod. Shooting patched round balls out of the sidelock on the other hand are not easily pushed past the crown with thumb pressure and usually require a quick  rap on the short starter to get past the crown. If your rifle has a QLA (false muzzle), YMMV.

thanks for the info.  I have never, ever shot traditional or a patched round ball. I use a starter on my saboted projectiles and couldn't figure out why you other guys don't use em on inlines.

I guess I'm just a wussy.

I never used them on my Omega's, but my Knight, wow, the rifling cuts the sabot when I start it.  Have to to get past the crown on the sabot, then easy...
