Encore Barrel Break In
« on: April 25, 2009, 03:10:35 PM »
Just got a new .223 barrel for my Encore. I have several other barrels but bought most of them used. Anybody do anything special for the first few rounds when they get a new barrel?

Clean it ! Shoot it.  When done shooting it, clean it very well.
I have friends that will clean, fire a shot. Clean, Fire two shots. Clean, fire three shots. Clean and so on On till they get to fifty shots or so.  I personaly Just Like to shoot not clean.
Do a search on this subject and you will get all kinds of help.

Clean it well befiore taking the first shot.  Sometimes the amount of chips you get is a little scary.  You don't want to push them out with the first shot.

Good. Thats pretty much what I had in mind. I know a guy that goes thru a huge ritual about taking a shot, cleaning, then so many more shots, cleaning, etc. I honestly don't know how he can keep track of what he's doing. Besides, I don't want to shoot up a whole box of bullets just to break in a barrel.

I always clean, shoot a few times, repeat.  No big deal, I just clean frequently for the first 50 shots or so.  I never count the number of shots or anything.

As mentioned, you will get several opinion's on this. I consider it more as to seasoning a barrel. Kinda like seasoning a cast iron skillet.
First 5 shots, each shot, clean then oil. Then 3 shots, 5 times, clean, oil. Then clean an oil every 5 shots 4 more times. At this point I'm done. It's just solvent's only after 25 to fifty shot's. I only clean, oil again if I know it's going to be put away for 30 or more days. I will give it a 1 stroke with a brass or nylon brush every 100 or so rds. I record all my shots on the bench. I don't worry about an occasional varmit shot. A data log is nice to keep around. But it's no good unless you use it.
