CVA 58cal. Hawkens
« on: May 05, 2009, 07:08:55 AM »
Hello, I have had a 58 caliber CVA Hawkens rifle for more than 10 years. I bought this gun at a gun-show for $125.00. When I bought this rifle, it was hard to tell if it had been shot, if it had been shot, I dont think it had been to many times. This rifle is in excellent condition, with just a little place around the hammer. In the years I have had it, I have used it to shoot in BP tournaments and used it to hunt deer and hogs with. The only info I have been able to find is it was made sometime in the 70's. If any of you might have any info, I will appreciate it very much....Ray

2 wedge pins?  Could very well be a mountain rifle. I recently sold my 58 mountain rifle for 4 times what you paid.

This rifle has only one wedge pin. The rifle has brass, butt plate, cap box, trigger guard and thimbles. I was told years ago at a BP shoot, that one of the guys there mentioned it being a Mountain rifle. I am not sure...Ray

BigBlock, those are great pictures. My rifle looks more like the second picture, except my wood is lighter. I appreciate you doing this. I am not wanting to sell this rifle. I was just fishing for information, maybe what it is worth. CVA in the past was never any help, except they told me what I already knew. The rifle was made in the 70's. I have used this rifle for deer, but I realy like taking it on hog hunts. I have never had one run very far if any, after being hit with the 58 round ball....Thanks Buddy..Ray

Ah, you don't want that rifle.  Tell you what, as a personal favor to you, I'll take it off your hands for what you paid for it.

What?  I had to try!   ;) ;D

Big Block, Like I had said before, I found it at a gun show some years back. And when I am at a show or gun store pawn shop I always look, but I have never seen another one. When you shoot it, it has a thump, but it is very accurate. I have had offers in the past, but I think I will keep it...Ray

$400 sounds about right, maybe a little low even.  Who knows what you could get if you find the right buyer.

I have several old CVA catelogues.  no such gun listed in them.  There is a Big Bore mountain rifle in 58 cal that was made for a coouple years.  However, CVA put out several guns on a very limited basis.  I have never seen some of them anywhere. There was a CVA Zouave reproduction, and the Prospector Pistol.   There were even some guns that were never in the catelogues but were advertised in magazines.   From 1977 to 1981, I worked in a sporting goods store and saw some of the advance flyers CVA would send out to the stores.  I tried for some years to locate a Prospector pistol and even the wholesale outfits couldn't get them.  You may have one of these odd birds sold by CVA, that was sold in limited numbers.

Longcaribiner, thanks for the information. I know a picture of the rifle would be a big help. But I am not sure how to do pictures. I will try and get some help and post a picture of this rifle.......Ray
