Remington 700 Feed Problems
« on: April 22, 2009, 11:34:57 PM »
Ive got a Remington 700 with the built in box magazine, the first round chambers OK but the second round gets kicked out of the receiver and stove pipes when trying to chamber it quickly or if I go slow it actuallly flys all the way out of the rifle. Ive tried changing the tension on the spring with no luck. Its a 223. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ken

The first and second rounds feed from opposite sides of the magazine, so I would look for something amiss in the upper feed lip area on the side that the second cartridge feeds from - like the side sheet metal liner bent differently than the other side, and not retaining the cartridge until it's picked up by the forward-moving boltface.

Does it have the correct magazine and follower in it? The 223 magazine has a blockoff plate in the back to shorten it and keep the cartridges forward near the feed ramp. If someone has put a 308 magazine in there it'll do what you describe. It will also do that if it was originally a 308 action and been rebarelled with a bolt change. The feed lips are different on the two actions.

[I purchased the rifle new]

I would return it to the FFL I bought it from, for a warranty repair.
