Any of those will work, I like 2-7x scopes a lot, they offer a nice wide field of view on 2x, and plenty of magnification for any big game animal at any practical range.  ;)

I have a 3x9x40 on my 30-30 because in East Texas where I primarily use it they a have a 13" spread rule (outside the ears in alert position) on bucks so need the extra power to make sure I'm legal. Otherwise a 4x would be fine. I usually leave mine set on 3x.

I have to agree with the 2-7x   If where you hunt gets as dense as where i hunt , then that 2 power is damn handy at close range ( have had alot of deer creep in close and undetected till they were at spitting distances ;) )

In fact that 2-7 is what i will be putting on my 44 mag handi , Either leupold or nikon would work out fine .. Already killed one cheap BSA 4x scope with the rig so far heh

So next glass has to be a better quality

2X7 100%!!!  It does everything I have ever needed from a variable scope. I have more of them than all others combined!

IMHO if your choosing a variable, its the best choice for this caliber.

I think of the .30-30 as a shorter range rifle that I'm not gonna be taking when I expect shots out past 150 yards. Mine wears irons and heck I've taken out PDs with it out to around 150 in front of witnesses at the first GBO PD shoot. Iffen I can't kill a deer with it at that range then I have no business shooting at it anyway.

If ya just gotta scope a .30-30 a low power fixed like the mentioned 2.5x or 4x to me seems about right or a very low power variable with a top end magnification of 4x or 4.5x or so seems a good versitile compromise. Nothing wrong with the 2-7 but it gains you nothng really when hunting over the lower power scopes and limits the FOV a bit more for fast up close or moving shots. I like 2-7 scopes but generally reserve them for longer range guns than the .30-30. Ya really don't need 7x inside 200 yards on deer.

I got the vx-1 2x7....I agree with everones post, even I agree that  7x is not needed....really got it for the 2x in carolina bays....I always havw wanted to have a leupold...never could seem to feel good about the cost...3 kids...they are grown now...I got my 2004 30-30 nib last year.my son, 16, had one of his friends working a a local dealer. He found it in a storeroom, they overlookded it....he told me about it and I bought it.

I sponsored this young man in his hunter ed class, cause his dad was working, and mom had ms.
he taught me to use a climbing stand, and conquer my phobia about heights.
I helped him build  a  good platform stand...salt-treated lumber...built right.

on Oct 31, 2008, he killed his first buck, a spike ,from it.

This is tragic...after icing down the deer, he and a buddy were going to a church cookout. The left tire dropped off the road, and the driver, the other boy, over-corrected.The s-10 pickup rolled. The young man died istantly...
his friend was not too seriosly injured.
The day of his funeral ,his grandpa, who lived next door..passed away from cancer.

These events rocked our rural community for weeks.

I wanted to put a nice little scope on the gun.I think of Drew whenever I use it.

This handirifle is not for sale.....at any price...
