Lead and gas checks
« on: August 19, 2009, 10:51:42 PM »
Hi Guys, just taken reciept of my new Glock 30 in .45acp and am looking at reloading for it. I have reloaded before but only for a rifle. If i buy /cast some bullets for the glock do they need a gas check fitted?  How do you fit a gas check and where are they available? Is there anyone here who has used lead bullets and had a problem with leading in the glock barrel? I will be using the one barrel only cos getting spare barrels in South Africa is going to be difficult i think.
Thanks for the help.
Regards to all of you

Welcome, Dobson! As I'm sure you know there is much debate as to the safety of using lead bullets in Glock barrels. I would clean it frequently to insure there was no lead build up in the rifiling. The application of gas checks is normally done during the size/lubricating operation of cast bullets. Perhaps you can buy your bullets already gas checked. I'm sure gas checks would reduce leading. Good luck!!

A guy I work with shot IDPA matches for a year and a half with a Glock 21 using cast bullets all the way.Because of the velocities involved with a .45 ACP I doubt gas checks would be needed. In fact some people say GC's shouldn't be used until velocities are over 900 FPS.

The only Glock I own is a model 17 in 9mm.  I have heard all the stuff about leading in a glock barrel but I have fired thousands of round of cast bullets from mine without much more leading than I have experienced with other weapons.  Its all in the powder and lube you use.  I have also fired thousands of rounds of 45 auto through several 1911s and a Ruger P90 without any leading to speak of and none were gas checked models.  The only time gas checks are needed in my experience is when the velocity is getting about about 1400 fps if your bullet is properly sized for your bore.  If not you can get leading at 700 fps with an undersized bullet.
