That question will get you several different responces, a lot of people use shotgun scopes and others use rifle scopes. Me personally, I use a Nikon Prostaff 3-9-40. It is on my 1895gs and I have plenty of eye relief. Here are a couple of pics.

thanks Brian , i was thinking about the 2x7x32 pro-staff . do you think this scope will hold up with the recoil of the 45/70 ?

1.5 x 5 Leupold in QR Warne mounts on my 1895. Release the scope and the irons are useable, not ideal but useable. From in very close to 200yds the scope is very good. I'm not using a 45/70 to varmint hunt with so 5X is plenty for a relaxed shot on deer sized game at 200yds. That big ocular lens with the reticle light knob takes a little getting used to ( homely ain't exactly the right word ) but it is the right tool for the job in my opinion.

I dont see why it would be any different than the one I got, go for it.

I have one of the old leupold 4x in 8mm mounted on mine fine cross hairs for the longer shots. Maybe when my eyesight start to go I will need thicker cross hairs.

Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 would be my first choice.

The Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32 is a great .45-70 scope.

I have a matte finish Burris Compact 3 x 9 on my 1895 45-70.  It's mounted in Leupold rings with a 1 piece base.  My scope has the "Ballisti-Plex" crosshair.  I like it a lot!!  I hunt at 3 power and do load development/benchrest shooting at 9 power.

I wanted something quick on the target and the ability to shoot with both eyes open. I went with a Millett red dot on my 1895MXLR.

Interesting question!  I put a Bushnell Holosight on my 45/70 Guide Gun.  Fast on target in the brush; and knocks 'em down fast when you pull the trigger.....
