Well that kind of changes things if you're looking for one gun.  If you're looking for one "non-rimfire" handgun, I'd be right there with you with the 44mag.  If you're talking about what one handgun would I pick if I absolutely had to only have one pistol of any kind for the rest of my life, I'd be going with a 22lr because like you said it's done everything and it's pretty easy to have a life supply of ammo in an ammo can.

Need anything else? Probably not. Love my .500 smith and .454's though.

44MAG is OK for smaller big game, but I still prefer the 375JDJ as it really will do them all.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I like it because I can find ammo anywhere, can reload it, can cast for it, make shot shells for it, use it in my Marlin rifle, can be used in a short concealable revolver, or a long revolver with a scope.  Very versatible.  It truely is a great round.  Second would probably be the 45 LC.  357 is great, but not as good a hunting round for larger game.
